NAMPA, Id - Nighthawks take two against the Yellowjackets as the Nighthawks were able to come back from a six run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one before a complete game gem from game two starter.
Game One - 11-8 (H. Bennett 4-0)
Game one was a fun one to watch as an early error put the Nighthawks on the board in the bottom half of the second inning. However, a pair of two-run home runs and an error from the Nighthawks got Montana State Billings ahead in the third inning, and grew the lead in the fourth to five.
Dillon Eden was the starter for the nighthawks in this one, as he would go six innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs would come in, only four of which were earned from the pair of two-run shots. The three other runs would all come in following errors from the Nighthawks defense as both teams would struggle on defense to begin the day.
Billings would get one run across in the top of the seventh inning, but then the Nighthawks offense came to life. The starter for the Yellowjackets had to come out as he was getting high in the pitch count. As MSUB went to the bullpen, the Nighthawks offense woke up.
In the bottom half of the seventh, the Nighthawks would shrink a six run deficit to one as the Nighthawks would score five runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit batter. One of those hits was a two run shot from Carter Walsh to get the Nighthawks going, before an RBI double from Kyle Becker and a two RBI double from Gavin Brubaker shrunk the lead to one.
Jakob Rochelle came in to pitch for Dillon Eden in the seventh inning, and went two outs in the sixth inning, only allowing one hit and striking out two batters before getting taken out with two outs and a lefty at the plate.
Pitching coach Matt Hollod and Head Coach turned to the lefty arm out of the pen, Hunter Bennett, and Hunter would throw two pitches and get the batter to lineout back to him, as Bennett would make the play on the hill for the final out in the eighth inning, and would soon be credited with the win.
Clutch hitting from the Nighthawks offense would help the Nighthawks take the lead in the bottom half of the eighth, as the Nighthawks would score another five runs on five hits, giving them an 11-7 lead going into the ninth.
Wade Duncan would go out to pitch the top of the ninth in a less intense outing then what he has become accustomed too, as he would finish the game allowing two hits and one run to come in before getting the final out to secure an 11-8 come from behind victory to take game one from GNAC rival MSUB.
Game Two - 5-0 (C. Talley 5-0)
Game two was a pitching duel between the two starters, as Cobin Talley would take on Brennen Chappell on the hill for the Yellowjackets. Chappell would throw over 100 pitches threw five innings, as he closes in on 100 career strikeouts, but Chappell will have to wait another week to hit that impressive career mark as he couldn't get the five strikeouts needed.
Chappell kept the Nighthawks at bay for most of the game besides a double to deep right center from Kaleb Karpstein that scored Gavin Brubaker from first after he got aboard on a walk in the bottom of the third inning.
The fifth inning is where the NNU offense would get a hold of Chappell and get a good lead over the Yellowjackets. It started with a leadoff homer off the bat of Kaleb Karpstein as he would send another ball into right center, but this time it would travel up and over the wall for a solo shot to start things off in the fifth.
The Nighthawks wouldn't stop there, as they would take advantage of an error from the second baseman to put Adrian Arechiga on first with no outs. Kyle Becker would single down the right field line to put runners at the corners for designated hitter Mason Leavitt.
Leavitt would get down early and need to battle against Chappell, but would end up winning the battle in the end as Mason would send a towering shot to left field for a three run homer to give the Nighthawks a five run lead with only six outs left to go.
Corbin Talley would be able to finish the game, giving the Nighthawks their first complete game of the year, as Talley would go the full seven innings, only allowing three hits, the walks, and striking out an impressive nine batters on the way to his fifth victory.
The Yellowjackets and Nighthawks face off once again tomorrow with another double header in Nampa, starting at noon here local time. The Nighthawks will look to get the series win tomorrow, something they were unable to accomplish last year against this team. NNU improves to 20-8 on the season and remain undefeated in GNAC play, as they move on to 10-0 on the season.
