NAMPA, IdahoĀ - NNU was able to go and get the series win against Montana State Billings as a split double header would give the Nighthawks their third win of the series as they would wrap the weekend upĀ
Game One - 3-5 (G. Brubaker 1-1)Ā
Game one was a hard one to swallow for the Nighthawks as they would fall in game one of the double header as the Yellowjackets were able to squeak out their first win of the series. Another sloppy start on defense allowed three runs to come across in the third inning. All three of the runs were unearned as they came across due to two different errors.Ā
Grayden Lucas got the start for the Nighthawks in this one, as all three runs would eventually get put on him as he would go two and a third innings, get four strikeouts and having no earned runs against him.Ā
Bullpen day for the Nighthawks in both games as the Nighthawks would go with six different pitchers in game one. As a pitching staff, they had a solid game as they would only allow two earned runs while striking out nine batters over nine innings.Ā
Sadly those two earned runs would be the go ahead and winning runs and the Nighthawks offense wasn't able to come back again here in this one after coming back from the three run deficit early in this one.Ā
Three runs would come across for the NNU offense in this one, all three coming across on the long ball as Kaleb Karpstein and Adrian Arechiga both would send one over the left field wall; Arechiga bringing in Gavin Brubaker as well on his home run.Ā
Sadly this would be the only offensive production that ended in runs, as the Yellowjackets limited the NNU offense to only seven hits and three walks on their way to a two run victory over the Nighthawks here in game one.Ā
Game Two - 14-6 (H. Hill 1-0)Ā
Game two of today would be a bullpen game for both teams as a combined 11 pitchers would take the bump in game four of the series. NNU's pitching staff would come out on top however as they would only allow a combined nine hits and five earned runs (one unearned) across the seven inning game.Ā
A.J. Hendrickson would start on the hill for the Nighthawks, starting off the game very efficiently, but sadly it didn't last too long as pitching Coach Matt Hollod would have to take him out in the third inning as A.J. would end the game with three earned runs, three hits, and one strikeout.Ā
Hayden Crews would come in for a relief outing in the third and he would also struggle as he would give up two runs as well before being able to bear down and get out of the inning. He would then go on to pitch a few more outs, ending his day with two and a third innings pitched, and three strikeouts.Ā
After that, it was smooth sailing for the Nighthawks as Hunter Bennett would come in to pitch against a lefty bat to get a lefty on left matchup, where Bennett would get the groundball he was looking for however another error by the Nighthawks defence kept the inning going.Ā
Thankfully no damage was done as Hawk Hill would come into the game and get the final out, not allowing a run to come in in the fifth inning. Hill would go out to pitch once again in the sixth inning, this time with a 7-5 lead on the scoreboard, but another error by the defense would allow another unearned run to come in, and the Nighthawks would have to turn to Wade Duncan to get an extended save, as he would come in with a runner on third and a 7-5 ballgame.Ā
As mentioned above a run would come in as the first batter Duncan faced in the sixth inning would be able to single and score the run after the error earlier in the inning before Duncan was able to bear down and get the final out of the inning.Ā
The Nighthawks offense however would have an amazing answer to dropping the first game of the day, as they would have a productive game at the plate in this one, as they would score 14 runs on 13 hits and an impressive ten walks and only three strikeouts.Ā
The NNU offense went back to their identity with station to station baseball as there were only two extra basehits in this one, as Carter Walsh and Tate Lewis would both hit doubles.Ā
The Nighthawks move to an impressive record at 21-9 on the season and a near perfect conference record, as they would receive their first GNAC loss today as they move to 11-1. The Nighthawks head to Ellensburg Washington next weekend as they will go and face off against the Central Washington Wildcats. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at noon Pacific Time to start another double header, this time, between the Wildcats and the Nighthawks.Ā
