Nighthawks Remain Undefeated In GNAC Play With Two Wins Over Saint's

LACEY, Wa. - NNU baseball gets the series sweep in two tight games today against the Saint Martin Saints. NNU's pitching staff had a tremendous weekend only allowing nine runs to score against them this weekend through four games.

Game One - 2-0 (T. Stolfich, 1-0)

Game one, similar to yesterday, was a good pitching dual between Blaze Wong for the Saints and the Nighthawks pitching staff. Grayden Lucas would start on the hill for the Nighthawks in this one, getting his first start of the season today in Lacey. Lucas went an impressive three and a third innings, only allowing one hit, and two walks as he held the Saints to no runs through the first third of the game.

Tyler Stolfich would come in relief today as he would enter in during the fourth inning, and he would go three and a third innings as well, only allowing three hits and two free bags on his way to three plus frames.

Gavin Brubaker and Wade Duncan would come in to finish the game, as they went one and a third and one inning respectfully. Brubaker would allow two hits, giving no free bags away as he would finish the eighth inning, with a 2-0 lead. Duncan would come in to get his fourth save of the year, throwing a quick one, two, three, inning. Wade would strike out two of the three batters he faced on his way to another save on the season.

As a pitching staff, the Nighthawks only gave up six hits and an impressive four free bases throughout the nine inning game.

On offense the Nighthawks continue to scrape by, but not smashing baseballs as they have the past few weekends. The Nighthawks offense was actually outhit in this victory, and both runs came in to score unearned, as two errors by the Saints defense allowed both of these runs to score.

However it's not the how that matters, it's the how much. The Nighthawks were able to score those runs and take advantage of the Saints mistakes to win game one of this Monday 2-0.

Game Two - 7-4 ( A.J. Hendrickson, 1-1)

Game two was a close game as well and the Nighthawks would have to come from behind to take the fourth and final victory of this series.

The Nighthawk's pitching staff would struggle here in this game in the first half of the game, allowing four runs to come in through four innings of work. Tyson Rutherford would get the start here for this bullpen game for the Nighthawk's staff. Rutherford would give up four hits and one walk as the Saints would get two quick runs off of him in the first and second innings.

Hunter Mahaffey would come in to pitch in the fourth inning after two solid innings from Hawk Hill, and Mahaffey would give up another two runs in the fourth inning, as he would struggle to find the zone and paint the corners.

However the pen would finish this one strong, as a strong performance from A.J. Hendrckson got the pitching staff back on track and allowed the offense time to get back and take the lead in the late innings. A.J. went 2.1 innings only allowing one hit by pitch in those innings and no hits.

The Nighthawk offense would score an early run in the second inning, as a hit by Coleman Parry followed by three wild pitches would allow Parry to score. But after that, the Nighthawks offense was held almost silent until the top half of the sixth inning.

In the sixth inning, the Nighthawks would be patient, as they would be able to load the bases with only one out, on two walks and a hit batter. After another strikeout, the bases were loaded with two outs for the top of the lineup. Parker Sobiesiak and Carter Walsh would continue to be patient and would both draw bases loaded, two out walks to bring the Nighthawks back within one run, 3-4.

In the top of the seventh inning, The Nighthawks would be able to score four runs and take the lead off of three hits and two walks. The winning run coming from the GNAC offensive player of last week, Kyle Becker, as he would hit a Sacrifice Fly to score the winning run, followed by a huge hit with two runners in scoring position with two outs by Parker Sobiesiak to grab two more insurance runs.

Even though it wasn't the prettiest of all days for the Nighthawks, they still walked out with two wins on this Monday. The Nighthawks now move to a flawless 8-0 record in GNAC play, and a solid 18-8 record overall. The Nighthawks get to host the team following close behind with a 7-1 GNAC record this upcoming weekend as Montana State Billings come to town to try and take a couple wins against the Nighthawks.

First pitch is scheduled for March 20th, this Friday, at 3pm local time. The Temperature high is in the 80's, so bring out the summer clothes and sunglasses and come support and watch some amazing GNAC baseball this weekend, as the Yellowjackets come to play the Nighthawks.
