Northwest Nazarene Baseball got back into their rhythm Thursday night as they were able to get a blowout win over the Golden Eagles. The Nighthawks offense never took their foot off the gas pedal, as in nine innings they scored eight of those nine innings. The Nighthawks pitching staff got a nice break before the rest of the four game series to come, as they were able to rely on Dillon Eden and Kaden Mullins to pitch all nine innings.
Eden started the night off on the bump, as he would go on to pitch 5.2 stellar innings, giving up two runs; one of those being unearned, and only allowing 4 hits in his outing. Eden struck out 5 batters and only walked two as he faced 23 batters as he would go on to get his second win of the season.
Kaden Mullins would come in to relieve the starter, as he would throw the rest of the game. In 3.1 innings, Mullins gave up four hits, one hit batter, and only gave up one (unearned) run. Mullins would face 17 batters and throw 54 pitches.
NNU's offense was on fire. Behind disciplined at bats, extra-base hits, and aggressive baserunning, the Nighthawks were able to put up 31 runs against the Golden Eagles. The Nighthawks would walk 19 times and be hit by the pitch an additional 5 times. In a 20 hit game, NNU had 14 extra base hits, coming off 10 doubles, a triple, and three Home Runs!
Carter Walsh and Max Paterson were able to go back to back as they both hit home runs in the fifth inning. Walsh hit a three run home run and Paterson followed him up with a solo jack of his own. Jake Mestas would get in on the home run action, getting a two RBI jack in the seventh inning.
However the inning that ignited this offense was the fourth. The Nighthawks would go out and get ten runs in the top of the fourth inning coming off of five walks, a hit by pitch, and 3 hits. After walking the bases loaded, the pitcher for LA would throw a wild pitch, allowing a run to score, followed by an error off the bat of Adrian Arechiga, which led to another run.
Caleb Boswell would get a sacrifice fly to the center fielder giving the Nighthawks a 8-1 lead. This was followed by a walk by Liam Herrera with the bases loaded and a two RBI single from Carter Walsh. Parker Sobiesiak would hit a triple followed by a double by Gavin Brubaker to make it a 14-1 game.
Brubaker would then advance to third on a wild pitch and an errant throw would bring him home to give the Nighthawks a 15-1 lead before the Golden Eagles were able to get the third and final out of the inning.
NNU moves to 4-3 on the season as the Nighthawks will look to continue this hot hitting and excellent pitching as they play two of their three more matchups against Cal State LA tomorrow, before the series finale on Saturday. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2pm Mountain Time.
