The Nighthawks reset after a rough game one earlier today to take the second game, giving them a chance to win their first series of the year. NNU wasn't able to keep game one in hand as they took their fourth loss of the season by a score of 3-16 before turning things around to win game three of this four game series by a score of 10-4 (7 innings).
Game One: Loss 3-16 (M. Anderson, 0-1)
Myles Anderson got the nod for game one having a decent outing. Anderson did get knocked around as he gave up four hits and had struggled with control as he added four walks. Anderson was able to go three innings for the Nighthawks today, before head coach Joe Schaefer decided to pull the string on his starter. Myles would give up four runs, only two of them earned, in his three innings of work.
NNU would dive into their bullpen this game, and the 'pen would struggle. Brayden Schaefer would go out and throw one inning, giving up four earned runs on six hits. Hunter Mahaffey would then come in the following inning, giving up another run off of three hits. Following Mahaffey, two way Kyle Becker would get an inning of work, giving up three earned runs on two hits. All three pitchers would get two of their three outs via the strikeout.
To wrap up game one, freshman Brayden Stidham would get his first appearance of the year, pitching the final two innings and giving up three runs on three hits.
Game Two: Win 10-4 (T. Rutherford 1-0) 7 Innings
NNU would be able to flip the script in game two, as they would take the win riding the backs of three amazing outings from the pitching staff, and solid station to station offense while taking advantage of errors made by the Golden Eagles.
Corbin Talley would get his second start of the year, going 3.2 innings, striking out six and giving up two runs (one unearned) and 5 hits. Talley would be able to work out of some tough situations to keep Cal State LA at bay long enough for the Nighthawk offense to take a lead and run off with it.
NNU's offense in game two was much more effective, getting nine hits, six RBIs, and five walks in game two. Nighthawks would take advantage of wild pitches and stolen bases to score multiple runs and keep the pressure on the Golden Eagles pitching staff.
The offense was evenly matched as the hits came from eight of the nine starters getting one hit apiece, as Gavin Brubaker would get a triple and his second hit in the ninth inning. Parker Sobiesiak would be one of the biggest contributors, as he was able to go 1-4 with two runs scored, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. DH Coleman Perry would also contribute as he went 1-3 with a hit by pitch and two runs scored as well.
Tyson Rutherford would come out to relieve Talley in the back end of the fourth, and would go 2.1 innings, only allowing one hit and one run, striking out three as he goes on to get the win and his first win of the season.
Pre-season All American closer Wade Duncan would also get some action tonight as he was able to keep his ERA at 0.00 after throwing the seventh inning and striking out the side. Duncan keeps the impressive start to the season going with zero earned runs, six strikeouts, and only one walk in his third appearance and 3.1 innings of work
NNU moves to 5-4 on the season as the Nighthawks will look to take their first series of the year in tomorrow's matchup against Cal State LA tomorrow. First pitch for the game is scheduled for 1pm Mountain Time tomorrow afternoon.
