Nighthawks Continue Impressive Season With Sweep in Day One Against Saint Martin's

NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene continues an impressive season with a sweep against Saint Martin's in day one of their series. They battled back in game one to take the 13-7 victory, and then dominated in game to with a 17-4 win. 

Game One


Saint Martin's came out swinging, putting up 3 runs in the top of the first behind RBI hits from Nicol, Hollabaugh, and Schabot. They tacked on another in the second with Hartnett's RBI double and extended the lead to 5-3 in the fifth thanks to Tom's RBI single.

NNU chipped away early with solo home runs by Nin Burns II and Gavin Brubaker in the first and second innings, and a sacrifice fly from Bryan Rojas in the third made it a one-run game.

The momentum swung dramatically in the fifth. After a series of NNU baserunners reached on errors, Cris Enriquez launched a grand slam to right field, capping off a five-run inning that gave the Nighthawks their first lead at 8-5.


NNU continued the offensive onslaught in the sixth with a two-run double from Rojas and added two more in the seventh on a two-run homer by Carter Walsh. Meanwhile, Saint Martin's plated two in the top of the seventh, narrowing it to 10-7, but couldn't keep pace with NNU's relentless bats.


NNU was able to cross 2 more runs across home to finish the game with a 13-7 win. 


Game Two 


After a gritty Game 1 victory, Northwest Nazarene came out swinging in Game 2 of the series, using a relentless offensive attack to take down Saint Martin's 17–4 and secure the series win.


Saint Martin's struck first with a solo home run from Hollabaugh in the top of the first, but NNU wasted no time responding. In the bottom half, back-to-back singles from Kaleb Karpstein and Adrian Arechiga set the table for Cris Enriquez, who doubled to left center to bring them both in and give the Nighthawks a 2–1 lead.


NNU broke the game wide open in the second. After a hit-by-pitch and two walks loaded the bases, Kaleb Karpstein delivered the big blow with a towering grand slam to left center, extending the lead to 6–1. It was just the start of a huge day for him at the plate.


Though SMU added a solo shot from Nicol in the third to make it 6–2, NNU answered again in the bottom half. Gavin Brubaker doubled and came around on a sac fly from Drew Deal, then Nin Burns II added an RBI triple to push the lead to 8–2.


The Nighthawks kept pouring it on. Karpstein reached on an error and later scored on a sac fly in the fourth. Then in the fifth, Burns roped an RBI double, Rojas singled, and both scored thanks to wild pitches and smart baserunning, pushing the score to 12–2.


Saint Martin's tried to claw back with a 2-run homer from Yonamine in the sixth, but it wasn't enough. NNU responded with a five -run explosion in the bottom of the inning. Burns continued his monster game with another 2-RBI double, Karpstein followed with a 2-RBI single, and Noah Palomares added an RBI knock of his own to cap the scoring at 17. The game ended with the Nighthawks in the lead, 17-4. 


Up Next


The Nighthawks will hit the field for their final day of regular season play against Saint Martin's. The first pitch is set for 1:00 pm and the second game will begin shortly after the first's completion.
