Nighthawks Split Opening Day in Series Against MSUB

NAMPA, Idaho – Nighthawk's Baseball began their weekend series against Montana State Billings on Friday the 7th with a double header. In an eclectic first game the Nighthawks took a walk off victory to start the day, 8-7. The second game followed suit going into extra innings but the MSUB squad was able to pull through with the 3-2 win. 
The Nighthawks now sit at 15-9 overall, and 4-2 in GNAC play.

Game One 


Montana State Billings was able to get on the board early, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the second. After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, Parker Bleggi delivered a clutch two-RBI single to left field, scoring Ryan Jeffrey and Ryker Fortier. Despite the pressure, NNU's Tyler Stolfich battled on the mound, recording two strikeouts in the inning to limit further damage. 


The Nighthawks responded in a big way in the bottom of the third, erupting for five runs on four hits to seize control of the game. Bryan Rojas got the offense started with a single, and back-to-back RBI doubles from Kaleb Karpstein and Cole Calnon quickly evened the score. With two runners on, Gavin Brubaker launched a three-run homer to left field, giving NNU a commanding 5-2 lead.


Tyler Stolfich delivered a strong performance on the mound for NNU, battling through 6.2 innings to keep the Nighthawks in control. Facing 27 batters, he allowed just 2 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 7 and walking only 1. His efficient pitch count of 86 allowed him to work deep into the game, before passing it to Landen Parker


In the bottom of the seventh, NNU added an insurance run when Cris Enriquez doubled and later scored on a clutch RBI single by Brubaker. Despite the momentum, MSUB stormed back in the top of the eighth, rallying for four runs on three hits to tie the game at 6-6. A bases-loaded walk and a three-run double by Fortier proved to be the key moments in MSUB's comeback effort, forcing the Nighthawks to dig deep heading into the final innings.


After a tense extra-inning battle, MSUB broke the deadlock in the top of the 12th when Fortier delivered an RBI single, giving the Yellowjackets a 7-6 lead. However, the Nighthawks refused to back down. In the bottom of the inning, Enriquez drew a leadoff walk before advancing to third on a throwing error. Brubaker then came through in the clutch, ripping an RBI triple down the right-field line to tie the game once again. With the winning run just 90 feet away, Carter Walsh stepped up for the first time after recovering from injury. He delivered a walk-off single through the left side, securing a thrilling 8-7 victory for NNU.


Game Two 


In game two of the doubleheader, the Yellowjackets shifted momentum their way in the top of the fourth. Jack Nehler's single and Kaden Kirshenbaum's walk loaded the bases before Fortier's fielder's choice brought in a run. A rundown allowed Kirshenbaum to score, giving MSUB a 2-0 lead before Ernesto LugoCanchola ended the inning with a strikeout.


​​NNU answered in the bottom of the fourth, cutting into MSUB's lead. Adrian Arechiga was hit by a pitch before Calnon and Enriquez followed with singles, the latter bringing in a run. With two runners on, the Yellowjackets escaped further damage as Noah Palomares struck out looking and Drew Deal lined out to shortstop, keeping the score at 2-1.


Ernesto LugoCanchola threw 5 strong innings for the Nighthawks. He allowed 3 hits and 2 earned runs with 9 strikeouts. Dillon Eden then stepped in for the NNU team on the mound for the remaining innings.  


The Nighthawks tied up the game in the bottom of the 6th. Karpstein singled to left field to get the NNU bat's going. He then advanced to second on a single by Calnon and scored on a single from Enriquez. The teams went into the final inning of the match tied at 2-2.  


Going to extra innings the MSUB team was able to put away the game in the top of the 9th. Bleggi reached on a walk and advanced to third from a single by Wright. He then scored on a passed ball to give them the victory, 3-2.

The Nighthawks continue their series on Saturday the 8th with another double header day. The first game will start at 12 pm against the Yellowjackets and the second game will follow shortly after.
