Nighthawks Turn It Around For Dominant Performance In Game Four Against MSUB

NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene baseball experienced both highs and lows on day two against Montana State Billings, falling to the Yellowjackets 16-5 before taking the nightcap 11-0.

The Nighthawks now sit at 16-10 overall, and 5-3 in GNAC play.


Game One 


Montana State Billings broke open the scoreless start to game one in the top of the 2nd. The rally started when Kaden Bertram and Jarret Elmer had back-to-back singles. Parker Bleggi then walked, setting the stage for Bodee Wright as he took the box. He pulled through, sending a homer over left field to bring them all home. The inning ended with the Yellowjackets up 4-0. 


Northwest Nazarene chipped away at Montana State Billings' lead in the bottom of the 3rd, pushing across a run to make it a 4-1 game. After Nin Burns II worked a walk to reach first, Cole Calnon followed with another free pass, putting two runners on with one out. Cris Enriquez then came through with a clutch RBI single to left field, scoring Burns. 

Montana State Billings added to their lead in the top of the 5th, tacking on two more runs to extend their advantage to 6-1. Kaden Kirshenbaum sparked the Yellowjackets offense with a double to right center. Ryan Jeffrey followed by drawing a walk, and Ryker Fortier kept the momentum going with a single through the left side, loading the bases. Bertram then delivered a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Kirshenbaum home to make it 5-1. Elmer then came through with an RBI single to right, plating Jeffrey for their second run of the frame. 


The Nighthawks didn't let up though and got their bats going in the bottom of the 5th. Burns II got things started with a single through the left side, and Karpstein followed by reaching on a fielder's choice, putting two runners on. After a flyout, Enriquez came through and ripped a double down the left-field line to bring home both Burns and Karpstein. 


Montana State Billings extended their lead in the later innings. In the sixth, Zack Blaszak singled before Jeffrey's RBI hit, aided by a throwing error and a wild pitch, made it 7-3. The seventh saw Bertram crush a homer to left center, followed by Blaszak's sacrifice fly, pushing MSUB's lead to 9-3. The Nighthawks pitchers began to struggle as the Yellowjackets built up their lead. MSUB had 2 walked in and then a 2 run RBI put the score at 13-3.  


MSUB added another point to the scoreboard in the top of the 8th. Before the Nighthawks were finally able to break the momentum and put 2 up of their own. Adrian Arechiga hit a nice single to left field bringing home Carter Walsh and Carson Burns


The Yellowjackets added 2 more runs to finish the game, 16-5. 


Game Two 


Northwest Nazarene came out strong in the early innings of game two, striking first in the bottom of the first when Casey Wayne delivered a clutch two-run double down the left field line to put the Nighthawks up 2-0. Their offense erupted in the fourth, putting 7 runs on the board. Carson Burns brought home Gavin Brubaker and Wayne on a throwing error. Jake Mestas then scored Burns with a single to right center and an RBI double from Adrian Arechiga brought home 2 more. Cris Enriquez finished off the inning scoring 2 with a single to center field.  


The Nighthawks kept the momentum going in the fifth, tacking on two more runs. Kaleb Karpstein's RBI single to right center scored Drew Deal, followed by Adrian Arechiga singling through the right side to bring home Nin Burns II. This brought the game score to 11-0 in favor of the Nighthawks. 


On the mound, Cole Calnon delivered a dominant performance, keeping Montana State Billings off the scoreboard through seven stellar innings. Calnon faced 27 batters, allowing just 7 hits while striking out 3 and not issuing a single walk. His efficiency and command helped set the tone for the Nighthawks, and played a key role in securing the 11-0 victory.


Up Next


The Nighthawks will be back on their home turf next weekend to host a series against Central Washington. Day one will begin at 3:00 pm on the Elmore W. Vail Field and game two of the double header will follow shortly after.
