Nighthawks Command The Field In Day One Against The Wildcats

NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene kicked off their series against Central Washington on Friday the 14th. In a dominant performance the Nighthawks recorded 2 victories for the day with a score of 11-4 in the first game and 4-0 in the second.

The Nighthawks now sit at 18-10 overall, and 7-3 in GNAC play.

Game One

Northwest Nazarene came out strong in the bottom of the 1st, plating 4 runs on 5 hits to take an early lead over CWU. Bryan Rojas got things going with a single through the left side, followed by another base hit from Adrian Arechiga. Kaleb Karpstein then delivered an RBI single to shortstop, bringing Rojas home to tie the game at 1-1. Cole Calnon kept the momentum going with a perfectly placed bunt single, allowing Arechiga to score and push NNU ahead 2-1. A fielder's choice from Cris Enriquez put runners on the corners, setting up a crucial sequence where Karpstein scored on a passed ball, extending the lead to 3-1. Gavin Brubaker then capped off the inning with a clutch RBI double to left center, driving in Enriquez and making it 4-1 NNU.

The Wildcats also got on the board in the first inning when Marcus Manzardo crossed home on a balk. However, the Nighthawks stretched their lead in the 2nd scoring another to put them up by 4. Carter Walsh made it to base on a bunt and advanced to second on a throwing error by the CWU's third baseman. Rojas then brought him home with a double up the left side.

The CWU team got themselves back into the game in the top of the 4th. The inning started with back-to-back singles from Brandham Ponce and Logan Blank, followed by a base hit from Andrew Sharp to load the bases. Brady Hinkle came through with a clutch infield single to the pitcher, driving in two runs and cutting NNU's lead to 5-3. Later in the inning Manzardo then delivered a key RBI single to left field, bringing Sharp home and making it a one-run game at 5-4.

The NNU squad responded in the bottom of the 5th and 6th innings. They put one on the board in the 5th when Enriquez doubled bringing home Calnon who got on base after being hit by a pitch. Then in the 6th Walsh doubled followed by a single from Nin Burns II. This set the stage for Rojas who hit a huge homer over the right field fence to put the Nighthawks lead at 9-4.

The Nighthawks added 2 more security runs in the 7th and 8th to walk away with an 11-4 victory in game one.

Game Two

The Nighthawks broke the second game open in the bottom of the third, scoring 4 runs on 4 hits while capitalizing on a CWU error. The inning began with Drew Deal doubling to right center, followed by a well-placed sacrifice bunt from Carter Walsh to move him to third. Nin Burns II then came through with an RBI double down the right field line, bringing Deal home for the first run of the game.

NNU added another run when Burns advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher and then scored, making it 2-0. Bryan Rojas kept the rally going with a single up the middle, and Adrian Arechiga followed with an RBI double to left center, bringing Rojas across the plate. Arechiga then showed his aggressiveness on the basepaths, stealing third before Kaleb Karpstein delivered a sacrifice fly to left field, capping off the four-run inning. The inning came to a close with the Nighthawks doing just enough damage, taking a 4-0 lead.

Ernesto LugoCanchola delivered a dominant performance on the mound, going the distance to secure Northwest Nazarene's 4-0 victory. Over 7 scoreless innings, he held Central Washington to just 3 hits while striking out 7 and issuing only 2 walks. His command was sharp, throwing 93 pitches and forcing a strong mix of groundouts and flyouts to keep CWU's offense in check.

With the explosive offensive 4th inning and the stellar performance by LugoCanchola on the mound the Nighthawks were able to shut out the Wildcat's in the second game, 4-0.
