Nighthawks Split With Sonoma State

Kentfield, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene Northwest Nazarene split their doubleheader against Sonoma State, falling 8-7 in 11 innings before bouncing back with a 7-3 win.

Game One

The NNU team battled through 11 innings in a hard-fought contest against Sonoma State but fell just short, losing 8-7 in extra innings.

The Nighthawks struck first in the second inning when Cole Calnon scored on a stolen base to tie the game 1-1. They built momentum in the third, with RBI singles from Bryan Rojas, Adrian Arechiga, and Calnon to take a 4-1 lead.

NNU extended their advantage to 6-1 in the fourth after a two-run homer from Carter Walsh. However, Sonoma State responded in the fifth with a five-run rally, capitalizing on key hits and an NNU error to tie the game at 6-6.

The game remained locked in a tense battle, with NNU reclaiming the lead in the seventh when Calnon scored again. But Sonoma answered in the bottom of the inning, sending the game into extra innings tied at 7-7.

Both teams struggled to break the deadlock until the bottom of the 11th, when Sonoma State's Harrison reached on a walk and later scored on an error, sealing the Nighthawks' tough 8-7 defeat.

Game Two

Coming out in the second game of the day the Nighthawks turned it around in their favor. They were able to build a commanding early lead and held strong to defeat Sonoma State 7-3.

The Nighthawks set the tone in the first inning, capitalizing on Sonoma State errors and key hits, including a two-RBI single from Jake Mestas, to take a 6-0 lead. Sonoma State got on the board in the second with an RBI double, but NNU's defense kept them in check.

After a quiet stretch, Sonoma State's Merz homered in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-2. NNU responded in the seventh when Drew Deal singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Gavin Brubaker, extending the lead to 7-2.

Sonoma State threatened in the bottom of the seventh with three consecutive hits, bringing in one run, but NNU's bullpen shut the door, leaving three runners stranded and securing the 7-3 win.
