Nighthawks Start Off Series With 5-2 Win Against Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene began their weekend competition against Chico State on Friday the 7th. In an exciting battle the Nighthawks were able to pull through with the 5-2 victory to kick off the series. 

The game started as a pitching duel between NNU's Ernesto Lugo-Canchola and Chico State's starter, with only one Nighthawk reaching base in the early innings.

However, NNU broke through in the third when Liam Herrera drew a walk and advanced to third on a double from Drew Deal. Carter Walsh then brought Herrera home with an RBI, putting the Nighthawks on the board. They extended their lead as Cris Enriquez doubled, bringing home Nin Burns II and Deal—helped by a throwing error—to give NNU a 3-0 advantage.

Lugo-Canchola capitalized on the momentum, striking out all three batters in the bottom of the third to maintain NNU's lead.

The game remained a pitchers' battle until the seventh, when Chico State's Ayden Nordby drove in Troy Kent to put the Wildcats on the board.

The Nighthawks responded in the ninth, adding two insurance runs to solidify their victory. Burns singled to bring home Walsh, and Bryan Rojas crossed the plate on the next play. Chico State managed a late run, but NNU held firm, sealing the 5-2 win.

Lugo-Canchola delivered a stellar performance, pitching six innings with 80 pitches and six strikeouts to earn the victory.

With this win, NNU builds momentum heading into Saturday's doubleheader against Chico State. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. Pacific time.
