Nighthawks Fall in Double Header Against Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene competed in a double header on Saturday the 8th against the Chico State Wildcats. Despite the Nighthawk's win against the Wildcats on Friday they were unable to edge them out on Saturday losing both games, 3-6 and 0-0.

Game One

Chico State jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Troy Kent got things started with a two-run homer to center field, bringing in Thade Miller, who had reached on a single. Later in the inning, Ayden Nordby tripled down the right field line, scoring Daniel Vierra and putting himself in scoring position. An RBI from Jesse Gadd brought Nordby home, ending the inning with the Wildcats ahead 4-0.

The Nighthawks responded in the second, getting on the board. Adrian Arechiga singled to left, and a double from Cole Calnon put him in scoring position. Arechiga then scored on a wild pitch before Gavin Brubaker's RBI brought Calnon home, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Chico State extended their lead in the third when Korey Likens grounded into a double play, allowing Nordby to score from third. In the fourth, Juan Nunez scored off an RBI from Vierra, putting the Wildcats up 6-2.

The Nighthawks threatened in the sixth, loading the bases after Brubaker and Carter Walsh walked, followed by a Jason Bell infield single. Bryan Rojas then delivered an RBI, bringing in Brubaker to make it 6-3. However, Chico State held on, securing the win as both teams prepared for the second half of the doubleheader.

Game Two

Much like the first game, Chico State wasted no time taking the lead. Miller walked, and Vierra followed with a single. Jeremy Keller's RBI brought in Miller, and a Nighthawks fielding error allowed Vierra to score. Michael Baker's double then drove in Keller, giving the Wildcats a 3-0 advantage after one inning.

Chico State continued their offensive push in the second. Patrick Barnum scored on a Kent single, prompting NNU to bring in Jonathan Zayas to relieve Blake Hammond on the mound. However, the Wildcats capitalized on another Nighthawk fielding error, bringing in Kent, followed by a Baker RBI single that scored Vierra to make it 7-0.

The Wildcats sealed their victory in the third, adding two more runs. Miller scored on a fielding error, and Kent crossed home on a Keller double, extending the lead to 9-0.

NNU showed late-game resilience, plating three runs in the sixth. Holt Williams doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a Kaleb Karpstein double. Nin Burns II followed with an RBI single, and Jake Mestas doubled to right center, scoring Karpstein. An RBI from Arechiga brought Burns II home, closing the gap to 9-3.

In the seventh, the Nighthawks added one more run when Carson Burns scored on a Karpstein RBI, but the deficit proved too much. Chico State secured the 9-4 win, completing the sweep.
