PUEBLO, Colo. – Northwest Nazarene baseball fell victim to a high-powered Colorado State Pueblo offensive attack on Thursday afternoon, as the Thunderwolves defeated the Nighthawks 22-4 in the opener of the four-game series.
The loss drops the Nighthawks to 7-4 on the season.
NNU got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the first inning, as
Nin Burns II and
Cris Enriquez both registered RBI singles to put the visitors up 2-0.
The Nighthawks still led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, but that was where the momentum shifted entirely to CSU Pueblo. The Thunderwolves scored three in that inning to take the lead, and then added four in the fourth, four in the fifth, and capped it off with an 11-run sixth inning to bring their total to 22.
Burns and Enriquez each notched another RBI in the top of the seventh to get NNU to their four runs. After the third out of the inning, the game was called due to the predetermined run-rule.
Burns had three hits to go along with his two RBIs.
The Nighthawks will look to bounce back in games two and three of the series tomorrow, with first pitch of the doubleheader against CSUP scheduled for noon.
