Nighthawks Split with CSU Pueblo in Friday Doubleheader

PUEBLO, Colo. – Northwest Nazarene had their second day of competition versus CSU Pueblo. In a day mixed with highs and lows the Nighthawks were able to come away with a split, taking the second game victory. Falling to the ThunderWolves in the first, 20-12, they then rallied and won in the afternoon, 16-5.

Game One

Northwest Nazarene started game one with an early spark as Nin Burns II launched a solo home run in the first inning to put NNU on the board. However, CSU Pueblo responded quickly, capitalizing on a leadoff walk and stringing together key hits, including a two-run homer from Christian Castaneda, to take a 4-1 lead after the first frame. Despite some early baserunners in the second, NNU couldn't push across another run, while Pueblo tacked on two more to extend their lead to 6-1.

In the third inning, NNU's offense came alive in a big way. Bryan Rojas kicked off the rally with a two-run homer, and after a string of hits, Carson Burns delivered a clutch two-run double. Cole Calnon then capped off the explosive inning with a three-run home run, giving NNU an impressive eight-run frame and a 9-6 lead. The momentum, however, was short-lived as CSU Pueblo answered with a dominant bottom half, scoring seven runs on a series of doubles and aggressive baserunning to reclaim the lead at 13-9.

NNU continued to battle, adding three more runs in the fourth, highlighted by solo homers from Bryan Rojas and Cris Enriquez to cut the deficit to 13-12. But Pueblo refused to let up, taking advantage of an NNU error and delivering another home run from Christian Castaneda, extending their lead to 17-12. A three-run blast from Kysen Howard in the fifth further widened the gap, making it a daunting 20-12 game.

Despite NNU's efforts, they were unable to generate any offense in the final innings, as Pueblo's pitching settled in and shut down any comeback attempt.

Game Two

As game two got underway Northwest Nazarene wasted no time making an impact in the first inning. After a one-out single from Bryan Rojas, Nin Burns II crushed a two-run home run to center field, giving NNU an early 2-0 lead.

On the mound, NNU's starting pitcher, Ernesto Lugo-Canchola, started strong, striking out Noah Williams and forcing Rob Mansour into a flyout. However, CSU Pueblo's Wyatt Reginato reached with a two-out single and later came around to score on Christian Castaneda's RBI double. Lugo-Canchola responded well, striking out Dax Howard to limit the damage and maintain a 2-1 lead.

The Nighthawks built on their lead in the third and fourth innings, thanks to timely hitting from Adrian Arechiga, Kaleb Karpstein, and another big swing from Nin Burns II, who doubled in a run. NNU's offense provided run support, but Lugo-Canchola remained steady on the mound, working through the middle innings while keeping Pueblo's offense in check.

He finished his outing after 5.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits while striking out six. Despite some late-inning threats, his ability to generate strikeouts kept the Nighthawks in control.

By the seventh inning, NNU's offense exploded again, adding seven more runs highlighted by a three-run double from Bryan Rojas and key RBI hits from Nin Burns II and Gavin Brubaker. The bullpen shut down any hope of a Pueblo comeback, and the Nighthawks secured a dominant 16-5 victory.
