Nighthawks Finish With Win In Colorado

PUEBLO, Colo. – Northwest Nazarene finished their weekend in Colorado on Saturday the 15th as they split in the series versus Colorado State Pueblo. With CSU Pueblo taking the first two games and the Nighthawks taking third and fourth. In the final game the Nighthawks were dominant taking the victory, 8-1. The team was led by their starting pitcher Cole Calnon who pitched the full game helping to seal the win.

Northwest Nazarene jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk by Cole Calnon. After stealing second, he came around to score on a single up the middle from Nin Burns II. Burns II also swiped second, setting up Bryan Rojas for an RBI double to left center. A sacrifice bunt advanced Rojas to third, and he later scored on a balk, giving NNU a quick 3-0 advantage.

CSU Pueblo answered in the bottom of the first after L. Kelly reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. He moved to third on a groundout and came home on a sacrifice fly, making it 3-1. However, that was the only run CSU Pueblo managed to push across for the rest of the game.

The teams battled through several scoreless innings, with both pitching staffs keeping the offenses in check. NNU extended their lead in the fifth after Rojas reached on a throwing error and Kaleb Karpstein, coming in as a pinch hitter, drove him in with a single. In the seventh, Rojas continued his big night with another RBI double, and Karpstein followed with an infield single to bring him home, stretching the lead to 6-1. Two more insurance runs came in the ninth after Rojas doubled again, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Brubaker. Jake Mestas later reached on an error and came around to score on a double from Carter Walsh, sealing the 8-1 victory.

Cole Calnon was outstanding on the mound for NNU, delivering a dominant complete-game performance. Over nine innings, he allowed just five hits and one unearned run while striking out nine.

The Nighthawks will host their first home series of the year this coming weekend against Colorado Mesa. The teams will hit the field on Thursday the 20th at 12:00 pm to kick off the four game series.
