Nighthawks Battle Back To Win Second Game Versus WOU

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Nighthawks Baseball team headed to Oregon this week to compete against the Western Oregon Wolves. This series marks the first game of GNAC play for the Nighthawks this season. After struggling the first game losing, 3-0, the Nighthawks battled back in the second, winning 6-1.

The Nighthawks now sit at 12-8 overall, and 1-1 in GNAC play.

Game One

The Wolves got on the board early into the first game as they looked to build up a lead. Owen Bishoff got the WOU's bats going with a double up the middle. He then scored the next play on a single by John Oleson. Having gone 3 up 3 down in the top of the inning the Wolves set the tone with the score at 1-0.

WOU stretched their lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Darin Chapman started the inning off with a single to left field. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andre Jackson II and scored on an error by the Nighthawks shortstop. The Wolves also scored Oleson that inning who reached base on the same error.

With the score set at 3-0 the game turned into a battle at the mound for the competing teams. Devin Bell, the starting pitcher for the Wolves, had a commanding day. He pitched 119 pitches in 9 innings, striking out 13, walked 1, and allowed 3 hits. The Nighthawks looked to respond with a dual effort by Kailer Saunders and Jakob Rochelle, but the Wolves bats stayed hot totalling 8 hits and 3 runs for the day.

The Nighthawks looked to respond in the second game as the first game came to a close in favor of the Wolves, 3-0.

Game Two

Game two started the same for the teams as they hit the field in the afternoon. The WOU squad got their bats going early with a single from John Oleson to center field, moving Andre Jackson II to third who got on base on a throwing error by the Nighthawks shortstop. Collin Irwin then brought him home with an RBI fielder's choice. The Nighthawks responded in the top of the 2nd when Kaleb Karpstein doubled down the left field line. Drew Deal then singled bringing home Karpstein to put the score at 1-1.

Northwest Nazarene erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on timely hitting and defensive miscues. The rally began with Gavin Brubaker's RBI single, followed by Deal's infield hit and a stolen base to keep the pressure on. Nin Burns II then delivered an RBI single, and an error by Western Oregon allowed two more runs to score. Noah Palomares added another RBI hit, while Adrian Arechiga's aggressive baserunning led to an additional scoring opportunity. With five hits and smart base running, the Nighthawks extended their lead to 6-1 before the inning ended.

The game ended with the Nighthawks on top and the teams splitting the day with the series sitting at 1-1.
