NAMPA, Idaho – A big first inning for Northwest Nazarene baseball helps boost the Nighthawks to an 11-6 win over Colorado Mesa.
The Nighthawks are now 4-9 on the season.
How it Happened
NNU started the game with a bang. After Nighthawks' starter,
Kyle Ethridge, posted a scoreless first inning, NNU went on to score six runs in the bottom half.
Mason Leavitt led off the game for Nighthawk with a double. He was brought in to score on an RBI single by
Shane Jamison.
Colby Moran scored Jamison on an RBI double. Later in the inning, Moran scored on a wild pitch. After another run scored on a fielder's choice,
Nolan Walker hit an RBI double that scored
Tyler Best.
Quentin Ayers hit an RBI double that would score Walker and round out the Nighthawks scoring in the bottom of the first.
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, the Nighthawks struck again for two more runs. The second run of the inning came from and RBI single by Walker that he hit back up the middle and off the pitcher. At the end of two, NNU held an 8-0 lead.
CMU tallied their first run of the game in the top of the 3
rd inning. They went on to add five more runs in the top of the 4
th with four hits, one of which was a three-run home run to make the score 8-6.
Shane Martin relieved Ethridge in the top of the 5
th inning after Ethridge had collected two strikeouts. Ethridge's final line was 4.2 innings pitched, allowing six runs, and collecting four strikeouts. Martin threw the final out of the 5
th inning and all the 6
th inning while allowing just one hit.
In the bottom of the 6
th, NNU added three more runs. Best scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a double and
Adam Paganelli bunted him over to third base. The Nighthawks other two runs of the inning came from a two RBI single by Jamison that scored
Kyle Payne and Walker.
Ty Pohlmann took the mound for the Nighthawks in the top of 7
th inning and threw lights out for the remainder of the game to get the three-inning save. Pohlmann allowed just three hits and no runs while striking out five batters.

The Nighthawks look to keep this momentum heading into tomorrow's double header with Colorado Mesa. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
