HILO, Hawaii – Northwest Nazarene baseball came up short in the first of a four-game set against Hawaii Hilo by a score of 7-6.
The Nighthawks are now 1-5 to begin the season.
How it Happened
All the scoring action for the Nighthawks happened in the 3
rd inning. NNU sent nine men to the plate and scored six runs.
Nolan Walker began the inning with a leadoff double and the scoring began with
Kyle Payne bringing him on a single.
Tyler Best had an RBI single to bring two runs in to score and followed it up by stealing second base.
Duke Pahukoa hit a single to score Best and
Shane Jamison would bring in Pahukoa with an RBI double. Jamison later came around and scored on a wild pitch. NNU held a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the 3
rd inning.
The Vulcans made some noise of their own in the bottom of the 3
rd inning, scoring five runs to answer the Nighthawks six spot.
Nathan Galusha started for the Nighthawks and was charged with all five runs, though just one of them were earned. Galusha came out of the game after pitching 2.2 innings while striking out one and allowing three hits.
Ty Pohlmann relieved Galusha and threw 3.1 innings without being charged with a run. Pohlmann struck out six batters and allowed one hit.
Jonathan Zayas came in to pitch in the 7
th inning. He threw 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one batter.
Those final two runs of the game came in the 8
th inning. The tying run came in to score on a balk and the go ahead run for the Vulcans scored on a sacrifice fly to left.
