AZUSA, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene baseball settled for the series split against Azusa Pacific, falling to the No. 8/22 Cougars 8-2 on Monday.
How It Happened
- For the second time in the series, NNU's Parker Price drilled a solo home run in the top of the first inning, putting the Nighthawks in front 1-0.
- The Cougars responded with a five-run second, however, using five hits, a walk, and a hit batter to make it 5-1 after two, which would be more than enough to earn the win in the end.
- The Nighthawks' other tally came in the top of the eighth, when Price recorded his second RBI of the game with a groundout that scored Tyler Best from third.
- APU added one run apiece in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings on their way to the victory.
Nighthawks Notes
- NNU, ranked No. 7/13, moves to 2-2 on the season as the split their first series of the year.
- Despite the six-run difference, there was only a one-hit difference between the teams with APU recording nine and NNU notching eight.
- The Nighthawks and Cougars also each had three doubles and four total extra-base hits, with Price's homer and an APU triple.
- Best was 2-3 with a walk, reaching base in three of his four plate appearances, while six other Nighthawks recorded one hit apiece.
- Shane Martin started for NNU, going 3.0+ innings and allowing six runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
- Nick Irwin and Brock Moffitt each tossed scoreless frames with two strikeouts in relief, followed by two innings from Joseph Ihli (one run allowed, three strikeouts) and one inning from Blake McFadden (one run allowed, one strikeout).
