SAN DIEGO – Northwest Nazarene baseball fell to Point Loma 8-5 on Saturday, capping a tough weekend that saw the Nighthawks drop all four games of the series to the Sea Lions.
How It Happened
The Nighthawks looked to be on track early, as
Parker Price brought home
Tyler Best with an RBI single in the top of the first to give NNU the lead.
The advantage would not last, however, as PLNU scored three in the bottom of the inning, including a two-run homer. The Sea Lions added one more in the third to make it 4-1, but the Nighthawks responded in the top of the fourth with a Best two-run bomb to cut the deficit to one.
The Nighthawks still trailed by one, 5-4, entering the seventh inning, but the Sea Lions plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a four-run lead.
NNU added a run in the top of the ninth on a Price sacrifice fly, but it was too little, too late as PLNU took the 8-5 victory.
Shane Martin started and took the loss for NNU, going 2.2 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits.
Blake McFadden tossed 3.1 shutout innings of relief with five strikeouts, while
Max Holtzclaw also allowed no runs in two innings with three strikeouts in a couple of good outings from the bullpen.
Tyler Best went 3-4 from the plate with two extra-base hits, a walk, and two RBI. Five other Nighthawks recorded one hit apiece.
Next Up
The Nighthawks will come back to the Treasure Valley for the Canyon County rivalry series next weekend, playing single games at College of Idaho on Thursday and Friday before a home-opening doubleheader against the Yotes on Saturday.
