Nighthawks Battle for Boise, Local Talent Shines

BOISE, Idaho - In the season's final meet before GNACs, NNU Track & Field visited Donna Larsen Park for the Ed Jacoby Twilight Meet hosted by Boise State University. The Nighthawks faced familiar competition from BSU, ISU, C of I, LCSC, and Eastern Oregon. NNU showcased local talent throughout the meet with a number of podium finishes.

The distance team had a very impressive day featuring several strong performances from athletes recruited from local schools.  In the men's 1500m NNU swept the top three finishes led by Brody Kemble (Middleton), Grady Mylander (Nampa), and Ian Stockett (Nampa). The women's 1500m race also placed several local recruits on the podium including Hazel Kunkel (Coeur D' Alene) in second, Cameron Moore (Eagle) in fourth, and Zoey Stauffer (Boise) in sixth.

The women's steeplechase resulted in another sweep with NNU claiming the top three positions. Morgan Erler (11:06) won the event with Keelin Stewart (Meridian) taking second and Becca Darwood finishing third. Emmett Stouffer (Bellevue) placed first in the men's steeple chase. In the men's 5000m Asher Ingram (15:20) finished first.

The sprint group also showcased local talent with senior Kayla Baniaga (Boise) placing second in the women's 100m (12.02) and fifth in the women's 200m (25.12). Sophomore Maddie Weatherford (Meridian) finished sixth in the women's 100mh with a new personal best time (15.28). Senior Anderson Kron (Meridian) finished second in the men's 110mh (14.95). Luke Hanson (15.24) and Jaden Booker (16.23) ran personal best times to finish fourth and eighth, respectively. In the men's 200m freshman Giovanni Carlino (Post Falls) finished sixth. Celia James finished fifth in the women's 400m (58.01).

For the jumping group Georgia Collins took home fourth in the triple jump (10.10m). Joshua Simbenga placed eighth in the men's triple jump (12.01m). In the pole vault Macie Kern (Boise) placed second (3.30m) and Kayley Morrissey finished seventh (2.55m). In the high jump Gerohm Rihari (Sugar City) took fifth place (1.90m) and Jonah Groce finished sixth (1.85m).

In the throwing events Thor Kessinger (Lewiston) placed seventh in the discus (46.29m). in the women's discus Emma Kwok finished fourth (42.45m) with teammate Madilyn McCarty (Meridian) placing seventh (41.09m). McCarty also placed eighth in the women's shot put (12.39m).  In the men's hammer Carter Alberts placed third with his personal best throw (54.16m). Emily Lewis (Athol) finished sixth in the women's weight (49.82m). In the javelin freshman Ty Swapp placed fourth (56.04m) with Nolan Meek placing sixth (50.33). In the women's javelin freshman Nessa Neveau (Pendleton) placed fourth (38.35m).

Next up the Nighthawks travel to Ellensburg, Washington for the GNAC championships May 4th and 5th.
