BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team battled Western Washington to a 2-2 draw on Thursday night.
The Nighthawks got on the board first in the 11th minute as Illyès El Yansli intercepted a pass and took three touches to the top of the box before finding the back of the net to give NNU a 1-0 lead.
NNU doubled its lead less than 10 minutes later. El Yansli found Youssef El Madkouri, who scored in the 20th minute to give the Nighthawks a 2-0 advantage.
Western Washington cut into the lead in the 28th minute as Landon Schulze scored to make it 2-1. Elijah Brockl made three saves in the opening half to help NNU carry the one-goal advantage into halftime.
The Vikings applied pressure throughout the second half, but the Nighthawks held onto the lead. Brockl made another save in the 67th minute as NNU kept Western Washington off the board for most of the final 45 minutes.
Western Washington eventually found the equalizer in the 88th minute as Tommy Carroll scored to tie the match at two. NNU held off the Vikings over the final two minutes as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
NNU moves to 6-1-4 overall and 1-0-1 in GNAC play. They'll head to British Columbia to face Simon Fraser on Saturday.Â
