Nighthawks Dominate and Rally to Complete Friday Sweep in Ellensburg

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Northwest Nazarene put together a strong showing in Friday's doubleheader against Central Washington on April 18. The Nighthawks came out swinging in game one, powering their way to a dominant 12-3 win. In game two, the Wildcats responded with a tougher challenge, pushing the contest into extra innings. But NNU stayed composed and sealed the sweep with a 7-4 victory.

Game One

After a scoreless first two innings, NNU's offense came alive  in the top of the third. With two outs, Bryan Rojas doubled home the game's first run, and Adrian Arechiga followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The fifth inning saw the Nighthawks blow things wide open. Rojas delivered again with an RBI double, and Arechiga followed with a clutch triple that brought in two more. He later scored on a double from Cole Calnon, capping a four-run frame that pushed the lead to 6-0.

NNU added two more in the sixth, highlighted by Rojas' third RBI of the day and a sacrifice fly from Nin Burns II. Rojas wasn't done and drove in two more in the ninth, finishing with a stellar 4-for-6 day at the plate and 5 RBIs. Calnon also impressed with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

On the mound, the Nighthawk's pitching staff had a stellar performance. Through a joint effort by Tyler Stolfich, Josh Bishopp, and Joseph Ihli they only allowed one run through the first eight innings. CWU's Birch tried to spark a late rally with solo and two-run homers in the eighth and ninth, but the Wildcats couldn't close the gap.

The Nighthawks walked away with the comfortable 12-3 win in game one.

Game Two

Northwest Nazarene found themselves in an early hole in game two, as Central Washington struck first in the bottom of the first inning. After a single, an error, and a walk loaded the bases, CWU's Leid launched a grand slam to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead right out of the gate.

NNU chipped away in the third when Carter Walsh led off with a single and eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Kaleb Karpstein, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

The game flipped in the top of the seventh. With two outs and two on, Adrian Arechiga came through in a big way, launching a three-run homer to left to tie the game at 4-4. This sent the teams into extra innings.

The momentum from the seventh carried into the eighth for the NNU team. Gavin Brubaker led off with a single and later scored on a double play. With two outs, the Nighthawks rallied. Nin Burns II and Bryan Rojas reached, Karpstein drove in another run, and Adrian Arechiga added a third RBI with a reach-on-error to score Rojas. NNU ended the frame with 3 more runs to go up 7-4.

The Nighthawks' defense then put away the game allowing the team to walk away  with the 7-4 victory.
