Nighthawks and Yellowjackets Split Series in Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. – Northwest Nazarene closed out their series at MSU Billings with a split on the second doubleheader day. The Nighthawks claimed a 4-3 victory in the opener, rallying in the later innings to overcome an early deficit. However, the Yellowjackets responded in the final game, taking control early and securing a 9-1 win. With doubleheader splits on both April 11 and 12, the four-game series ended in an even 2-2 draw.

Game One

MSU Billings struck first, plating 2 runs in the second thanks to a two-out, two-RBI double by Bodee Wright. They added another in the third when Ryker Fortier drove in Kaden Kirshenbaum, who had advanced to third on a wild pitch.

NNU was held hitless through the first two innings and had only 1 base runner through three, but the bats woke up in the fifth. After a walk and an error, NNU capitalized with an RBI single by Carter Walsh. Nin Burns II then delivered a clutch two-run double, and Bryan Rojas followed with an RBI double of his own, capping a four-run inning—all runs unearned.

The Nighthawks threatened again in the sixth and seventh but couldn't add to their lead. Fortunately, Cole Calnon locked down the Yellowjackets over the final five innings on the mound. He did not allow a hit after the third and retired 12 of the final 14 batters faced.

The NNU team walked away with the win in the end with a score of 4-3.

Game Two

The Yellowjackets capitalized on NNU miscues in the first, plating 2 unearned runs thanks to a pair of errors and timely RBI hits from Kaden Kirshenbaum and Ryan Jeffrey. They broke the game open in the second with a five-run outburst, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Jack Nehler and a two-run homer off the bat of Kirshenbaum.

NNU's lone run came in the top of the second when Carson Burns knocked in a run with an infield single following a walk, wild pitch, and groundout to move the runner to third. The Nighthawks threatened again in the fifth and seventh innings but left multiple runners stranded.

The Yellowjackets added 2 more in the third on a two-RBI single from Parker Bleggi, taking advantage of aggressive baserunning and a Nighthawk throwing error.

Despite several pitching changes and defensive adjustments, NNU couldn't slow MSUB's offense or generate momentum at the plate. The game ended with the MSUB team on top with a score of 9-1.
