Nighthawks Split First Doubleheader in Series Against MSUB

BILLINGS, Mont. – Northwest Nazarene split the opening day doubleheader against Montana State Billings. After a tough 7-10 loss in game one, the Nighthawks bounced back with a dominant 11-1 win in game two. The two teams also split their first series earlier this season on NNU's home turf. With the series tied once again, tomorrow's matchup is set to be an intense battle as both teams look to come out on top.

Game One

NNU jumped on the board early, capitalizing on an MSUB error in the first inning to bring home the game's first run. After the Yellowjackets responded with a run of their own in the bottom half, NNU tacked on another in the second thanks to an RBI single from Casey Wayne that scored Gavin Brubaker, who had tripled to open the inning.

After MSUB plated four runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead, the Nighthawks stormed back in the fifth. A flurry of singles, including RBI knocks from Wayne, Cris Enriquez, and Brubaker, highlighted a 5-run frame that gave NNU a 7-5 advantage.

The Nighthawk bullpen held MSUB scoreless for three straight innings, but the Yellowjackets broke through in the bottom of the eighth, scoring 5 runs on 5 hits, aided by 2 NNU errors. MSUB reclaimed the lead for good at 10-7.

 Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader started off slow but picked up steam in the second inning when Gavin Brubaker knocked a leadoff double and later came around to score on a sac fly from Drew Deal. Bryan Rojas followed it up with an RBI single to give the Nighthawks an early 2-0 lead.

Carson Burns added to the momentum in the third with a two-out RBI single to bring in Cole Calnon and extend the lead to 3-0. MSU Billings answered with a solo homer in the bottom half, but that would be their only run of the game.

The Nighthawks stayed quiet through the middle innings until Nin Burns II stepped up in the seventh and launched a solo home run over the left field wall. A big eighth inning followed, starting with a wild pitch that brought in one run before Adrian Arechiga came through with a 2-RBI single to make it 7-1.

NNU sealed the deal in the ninth with another outburst as Liam Herrera scored on a single from Burns II, a wild pitch brought home Deal, and Arechiga smashed a two-run homer to cap off the victory at 11-1.

Up Next

The Nighthawks will look to win the overall series tomorrow, April 12th, with another double header day. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm at Dehler Park.
