NNU Volleyball Faces Tough Match Against #18 Alaska Fairbanks

NAMPA, Idaho – The Nighthawks hosted their last home game of the 2025 season on Saturday the 15th against nationally ranked Alaska Fairbanks who currently hold the number 18 spot. It was an exciting night in the Johnson Sports Center as the Nighthawks took time to honor their two seniors Madi Smith and McKaylee Becker. In a four set match the Nonooks came out on top with set scores of: 25-16, 25-22, 20-25, and 25-15.

The match opened with both teams trading points and settling into the rhythm of play. A kill from Maddy Hellem evened things up at 8–8, and a Nanook error gave the Nighthawks their first lead of the night. Determined to hang with a tough UAF squad, NNU turned up the heat on offense, getting back-to-back kills from Hailey Cheney and Madison Cheney. But a kill from UAF's Presley Engelauf shifted the momentum, giving the Nanooks the spark they needed to push ahead. With steady offensive placement and growing confidence, UAF pulled away and closed out the set, 25–16.

Feeling the momentum from set one the Nanooks jumped out early in set one taking a 5-1 lead. The Nighthawks then responded in a big way with an offensive run. A kill by Cheney, 2 by Hellem, and another by Madi Smith tied up the game 5-5. After getting themselves back in the game the Nighthawks kept it close to the very end. Tied up at 17-17 off of a kill by Abby Black the teams kept the energy in the gym high. The UAF team was able to pull through in the end and take the, 25-22, victory.

The energy shifted in the gym as set three got underway and the Nighthawks looked to put up a win against the Nonooks. Consistency from the Nighthawks paired with a few UAF errors saw the Nighthawks take a 7-4 lead. The Nanooks were able to tie it up briefly at 10-10 but the Nighthawks did not let up. 2 kills by Black and 1 by Smith gave the NNU team their lead right back working to keep their momentum. A service ace by Morgan Wilding put the score at 17-10 with the Nighthawks still looking strong. The UAF team found a spark to battle back into the game but the NNU squad held strong and finished the set 25-20.

The final set of the game saw the Nanooks take the overall victory. Finding their offensive momentum they recorded 12 kills to the Nighthawks 8. This combined with a .258 hitting percentage they closed the 3-1 match and 25-15 set.

Maddy Hellem led the Nighthawks offense with 13 kills partnering with setter Morgan Wilding who had 38 assists. Abby Black held down the defensive line for her team recording 15 digs followed by Kayci Spray who had 12.

The Nighthawks will take the trip to Canada as we head into next week as they travel to Burnaby to compete against Simon Fraser University. The teams will hit the court on Thursday November 20th at 7 pm Pacific Time.
