Nighthawks Face Tough Battle Against Simon Fraser Red Leafs

NAMPA, Idaho – The NNU volleyball team made the trip to British Columbia on Thursday the 20th to compete against Simon Fraiser. In a tough match up the Nighthawks fell in 3 to the Red Leafs with set scores of: 25-14, 25-14, and 25-16.

The match opened with the Nighthawks coming out strong off two back to back kills from Abby Black. After trading points early a kill by Madison Cheney set the score at 7-7. The SFU team found their momentum after this and put down 7 kills throughout the middle of the set and were able to stretch a 17-8 lead. The Nighthawks made a push to get back in but the Red Leafs pulled away with the 25-14 win.

Riding the fire from the first set the SFU squad came out and built up a fast 7-2. The Nighthawks fought to get back in the game. 2 kills by Hailey Cheney paired with kills by Maddy Hellem and Abby Black set the score at 9-16. However, SFU continued to stay consistent and finished the set ahead 25-14.

The NNU team made one final push in the third set as Black got the team going with 2 quick kills. Working to build up momentum the Nighthawks took a 7-4 lead after Madi Smith put down a kill. Despite the early lead the SFU came back strong on offense and totaled 11 kills to the Nighthawks 8. This paired with 6 blocks helped them put away the 25-16 set win and the sweep.

Abby Black led her team with 8 kills and also added 13 digs. Kayci Spray also added 12 digs to support the Nighthawks.

The Nighthawks will compete in their final game of the 2025 season on Saturday the 22nd. The match up will be against #14 Western Washington and the teams will hit the court at 6:00 pm PT.
