Nighthawks Battle to Victory Against Saints with a 3-2 Win

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene volleyball team hosted the Saint Martin's Saints on October 9th in the Johnson Sports Center. In an exciting afternoon matchup, the Nighthawks came out on top in a tightly contested five-set match, winning 3–2 (24–26, 25–17, 22–25, 25–21, 19–17).

Set one was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading points throughout. Tied at 20–20, a kill by Abby Black gave the Nighthawks the edge they needed, but the Saints' offense responded with four straight kills to claim the set in extra points, 26–24.

The Nighthawks came out firing in set two, taking control early and maintaining a commanding lead. A kill by Maddy Hellem pushed the score to 18–10 in favor of NNU, and the Nighthawks held strong behind kills from Black, Hailey Cheney, Madi Smith, Madison Cheney, and Hellem to take the set 25–17.

With the match tied at one set apiece, both teams came out competitive in the third. The score remained tight throughout, but a few back-to-back NNU errors allowed the Saints to pull ahead late. A kill by Emily Garten made it 24–21, and although the Nighthawks fought back, the Saints sealed the set 25–22 on a kill from Zoey Crimin.

Set four saw another tightly contested frame. The Saints took an early lead before the Nighthawks responded with a kill by Black to go up 10–9. NNU built momentum behind four straight kills from Hellem, extending their lead to five. Riding that energy, the Nighthawks closed out the set 25–21 to force a decisive fifth.

Feeling the energy on their home court, the Nighthawks came out strong in the fifth set, but the Saints quickly answered to tie things up at 6–6. A massive block by Madi Smith put NNU back in front as they headed into the second half of the set with an 8–7 advantage. The Saints, however, refused to back down—capitalizing on a Nighthawk error to take the lead at 11–10. Riding the momentum of the gym, the Nighthawks rallied back and closed out the set 19–17 to secure the 3–2 match victory.

Hailey Cheney led her team with 21 kills followed by Maddy Hellem who had 19. Morgan Wilding recorded 63 assists and Kayci Spray had 23 digs.

The Nighthawks will be back on their home court this Saturday, October 11th, to compete against Western Oregon University. The game is set for 1 pm in the Johnson Sports Center.
