A Weekend of Nighthawks Volleyball Comes to a Close as They Battle Against Westminster

Nampa, Idaho - The Hampton Inn & Suites Nighthawks Classic came to a close this afternoon as NNU put up a great fight against Westminster University.

The Lady Nighthawks began the first set behind to the Griffins who came out offensively strong. With the score quickly going to 4-10 in favor of WES, Coach English called a timeout to regroup his team. Despite two kills put down by Kinloch and Machado the momentum seemed to stay with the Griffins. As NNU fell behind by 9, Couch English called his second time out successfully icing out the WES server. The Nighthawks battled hard to regain the match but were unable to stop the Griffins who took the set, 14-25.

Bouncing back from the first set the Nighthawks came out in the second taking an early lead. A perfectly placed setter dump by Moore pushed the Nighthawks ahead 8-3. Calling a timeout the Griffins coach tried to slow the growing momentum the NNU team was building. Staying on their game the Nighthawks continued to build their lead with a great block by Moore and Smith followed by two kills by Kinloch. The WES team attempted to chip away at the score deficit but the stellar defense of the Nighthawks kept them firmly ahead, winning the game, 25-15.

In the third set, Koch and Machado came out offensively strong helping the Nighthawks to build another early lead. It wasn't until WES's Josie Gerritsen came up to serve that the Griffins were able to tie it up at 7-7. White and Huntsman from the Griffins led their team offensively helping them to take the lead from the Nighthawks. Working from behind the Nighthawks held the Griffins at 23 as they went on an 11 point run. A kill by Kinloch and an attack error by the Griffins put away the win for the Nighthawks, 26-24.

The fourth set started off a little rocky for the Nighthawks as the Griffins came alive offensively. WES worked their way to a comfortable lead of 12-4. A kill by Smith turned on the energy for the Nighthawks and they began to battle their way back into the game. With an all around stellar performance NNU worked to cut the Griffins lead going into the last leg of the game. WES ended on top with a final score of 21-25.

To finish the game NNU battled hard but found themselves behind to start against WES. With the momentum on their side the Griffins shut down the Nighthawks taking the game, 7-15. Kinloch and Machado led their team with 13 kills each partnering with Moore who had 35 assists.

The Nighthawks will be on the road next weekend as they face off against Saint Martins on Thursday the 19th at 7 p.m. From their they will travel over to Monmouth, Oregon to compete against Western Oregon University on Saturday the 21st at 1 p.m.
