Nighthawks Suffer First Series Loss of Season at WOU

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Northwest Nazarene baseball struggled to get the offense going on Saturday at Western Oregon, falling to the Wolves in both halves of the doubleheader 7-3 and 1-0.

The 10th-ranked Nighthawks fall to 23-9-1 on the season and 13-7 in GNAC play.

Game One

NNU got their runs first in the opener, scoring two in the opening inning and one in the second. Cole Calnon scored after a Wolves error, Duke Pahukoa had an RBI groundout, and Calnon added an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Western Oregon would go the rest of the game on a 7-0 run, however, tallying one in the bottom of the second, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the seventh to take the 7-3 win.

Jonathan Zayas went 3 2/3 innings in the start with five runs allowed, followed by Josh Bishopp, Jaxon Henderson, Blake Hammond, and Nick Bateman out of the pen.

NNU had five hits in the game from five different players while also racking up nine steals, including three from Carter Walsh.

Game Two

The Nighthawks were able to get runners on base in each of the first six innings of the nightcap, but could not push any runs across. WOU tallied a run on two hits in the second inning that would prove to be the difference in the 1-0 final.

Kailer Saunders was strong in the start for NNU, going 5 1/3 innings with just the one run allowed on four hits while striking out six. Josh Brown entered in relief in the sixth to get the final two outs.

Next Up

NNU will have their bye week from GNAC play next week, but will play a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 9 at Utah Valley.
