LACEY, Wash. – Northwest Nazarene baseball split day one with Saint Martin's. They took game one by a score of 6-2 after 10 innings and later fell 7-4 in game two.
The Nighthawks are now 15-17 overall and 9-5 in GNAC play.
Game 1
Mason Leavitt reached base on a walk in the top of the 3
rd inning. Leavitt stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher.
Kaleb Karpstein brought Leavitt in to score with an RBI for the first run of the game.
The Saints tied the game up at one each in the bottom of the 4
th inning. The tie held for several scoreless innings. NNU regained the lead in the top of the 8
th inning with a solo home run from
Shane Jamison. Jamison's home run was his fourth of the year.
In the bottom of the 9
th inning, Saint Martin's manufactured one run to force an extra inning.
Rumble Reyes came to the plate in the top of the 10
th inning with no outs and bases loaded. Reyes hit a grand slam to give the Nighthawks the 6-2 lead.
Joseph Ihli came in for the bottom half of the inning and closed out the game for the Nighthawks win.
Game 2
The Nighthawks scored first again in game two with one run in the top of the 1
st inning. In similar fashion to the first run of game one,
Kaleb Karpstein got on base with a walk. Karpstein advanced to second on a wild pitch, and third on an error by the catcher.
Shane Jamison scored Karpstein on an RBI single to left field.
The Saints answered with two runs in the bottom half of the 1
st inning to take their first lead of the game.
Brock Moffitt held the Saints scoreless from the 2
nd inning through the 5
th. NNU capitalized in the top of the 6
th inning to regain the lead.
Rumble Reyes hit his second home run of the day to tie the game at 2-2.
Kailer Saunders was up next and singled to right center. Saunders then stole second, later advanced to third on a wild pitch, then finally was credited with stealing home to give NNU a 3-2 lead.
SMU generated the biggest inning of the day, scoring five runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning with the help of some costly defensive errors from the Nighthawks.
Colby Moran hit an RBI single that scored Jamison in the top of the 7
th inning for the last run of the game, bringing the score to the 7-4 final.
