NAMPA, Idaho - Northwest Nazarene women's soccer could not hang on to a late lead on Saturday, allowing two Central Washington goals in the final six minutes to fall to the Wildcats 2-1.
Â
The Nighthawks move to 4-4-4 on the season and 2-4-2 in GNAC play.
Â
NNU got on the board first in the 27
th minute thanks to a CWU miscue and smart play from the Nighthawks'
Alejandra Jaramillo.
Matisyn Ohlson fired a shot from outside the box that just missed going in and rang off the crossbar, bouncing back to a CWU defender. The defender thought that she had a clear header back to her goalie, but the goalie had come off her line and the pass sailed over her head towards goal. Jaramillo took advantage, racing around both players to tap the ball in for her first goal of the season.
Â
Each team had a few good opportunities over the rest of the half and the majority of the second half, but the defenses clamped down and it was still 1-0 in favor of NNU heading into the final six minutes.
Â
In the 85
th minute, the Wildcats earned a corner and a good set piece resulted in Casey Park scoring on a header. Three minutes later, CWU's Emily Darcy picked up a loose ball on NNU's defensive half and was able to find space to run down the left side before sneaking a shot past the far post for the lead.
Â
NNU would manage one shot in the final minute from
Madison Grande, but it went just high and right of the frame.
Â
NNU held the edge in total shots on the afternoon at 13-10, but CWU finished with a 6-5 advantage in shots on target.
Â
The Nighthawks will remain at home next week, hosting Western Washington on Thursday and Simon Fraser on Saturday.
