Nighthawks Blanked by Wolves

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Northwest Nazarene baseball was blanked in both games of Friday's doubleheader at Western Oregon, falling 3-0 in game one and 2-0 in game two.

NNU moves to 24-18 overall and 16-10 in GNAC play.

Game One

Western Oregon broke through for the first runs of the game in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on three hits. The Wolves would add one more in the sixth on a two-out RBI single to go up by three.

NNU had their best chance to score in the third, loading the bases with one out on a single, error, and walk. A strikeout and fielder's choice to shortstop would end the threat, however. The Nighthawks had runners on base in four of the first five innings, but only managed to reach safely once in the final four innings.

Spencer Schwehr started for NNU and went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven. Joseph Ihli tossed a scoreless 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and strikeout out two.

NNU had five hits in the contest, with two off the bat of Tyler Best.

Game Two

NNU starter Brock Moffitt and WOU starter Seth Kuykendall were locked in a pitchers' duel for most of game two, with neither allowing a run until the sixth inning.

Moffitt didn't allow a hit until the fourth, but then in the sixth the Wolves were able to score a pair of unearned runs to break the deadlock. Moffitt finished with a line of six innings, three hits, two unearned runs, and six strikeouts.

Kuykendall allowed just three NNU hits as well, but the Nighthawks were unable to convert them into any runs as two hits came in the fourth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but a strikeout and flyout ended the threat.

Next Up

The Nighthawks and Wolves will play two more tomorrow, as NNU looks to salvage a series split with WOU.
