Nighthawks Split Twinbill with Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene baseball earned a split with Azusa Pacific on Saturday, dropping game one of the doubleheader 12-1 before bouncing back for a 7-3 victory in game two.

How It Happened

  • Game One was all APU from the start, as the Cougars put up runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings to take an 8-0 lead.
  • NNU got on the board in the top of the sixth, as Walker Moore brought home brother Colton Moore with a sacrifice fly to center.
  • That was all the Nighthawks would muster, and APU added four more runs in the eighth to take the 12-1 win.
  • In Game Two, NNU got on the board first with two runs in the top of the opening frame, as Haden Keller notched an RBI single and Colton Moore brought home a run on an RBI groundout.
  • APU got one back in the bottom of the inning, and that 2-1 score would hold all the way until the bottom of the seventh, when the Cougars brought home a run on an error to tie things up at two.
  • NNU broke the game wide open in the ninth, though, as Walker Moore tagged a one-out, three-run homer and Parker Price and Grant Kerry added RBIs for a five-run frame.
  • APU got another unearned run in the bottom of the ninth, but that would be how it ended as NNU took the 7-3 win.

Nighthawks Notes

  • NNU moves to 2-1 on the year, and will now look to earn the 3-1 series win against the No. 8/22 Cougars on Monday.
  • The Nighthawks had just one hit in game one, coming off the bat of Grant Kerry.
  • Josh Bishopp made his NNU debut in the fifth inning of game one and pitched well, going three innings without allowing a run and striking out five.
  • In game two, Spencer Schwehr and Max Holtzclaw took care of business on the mound to help the Nighthawks to their second victory. Schwehr went five innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out six. Holtzclaw also struck out six in four innings, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs.
  • Walker Moore, Price, and Kerry each had two hits for NNU in the nightcap.

Next Up

As mentioned, NNU and APU will play one more time on Monday, finishing the four-game series at 3:00 p.m. Pacific. The Nighthawks will then stay down in southern California, visiting Point Loma for a four-game set from Thursday to Saturday.
