SEASIDE, Calif. - The Nighthawks took a 17-0 decision over Cal State Monterey Bay as redshirt junior
Jakob Rochelle pitched a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts and four Nighthawks homered.
It was all NNU from the jump as Rochelle struck out the first three out of four batters in the first and four runs would score in the bottom half for the Nighthawks.
Gavin Brubaker earned a full-count walk and
Kyle Becker knocked in a run on a two-out double. After a failed pickoff attempt, Becker took third and was able to score on an
Adrian Arechiga single to center. Another Single off the bat of
Caleb Boswell moved Arechiga to second and
Jake Mestas doubled down the left field line ot score both Boswell and Arechiga.Â
Four more runs came in after
Kyle Becker singled and Arechiga added a double. With runners at second and third with one out,
Jake Mestas singled to right center to score both runners and take a 6-0 lead.
Tate Lewis stepped up for the first time and launched a two-run home run to left field to go up 8-0.
Jakob Rochelle retired the side in order and
Carter Walsh led off the fourth with a homer to left field and
Gavin Brubaker singled to second. A
Kaleb Karpstein walk put runners on first and second before Arechiga continued his nice day with a another double to right center to score Brubaker. A
Caleb Boswell sac fly scored Karpstein as NNU started to pull away with an 11-0 lead.
Two more Nighthawk runs crossed in the bottom of the sixth as Karpstein was hit by a pitch and took second on a wild pitch.
Kyle Becker had a productive out, moving Karpstein to third and a wild pitch would allow him ot score. Arechiga then walked and stole second, moved to third on a Boswell ground out, and was driven in by a
Jake Mestas single to go up 13-0.Â
Another 1-2-3 inning for Rochelle brought up
Carson Burns in the seventh who smashed a home run to left field to score NNU's 14th run. Rochelle stayed dominant on the bump with another three up, three down inning before the Nighthawks scored three runs as
Kyle Becker led off the inning with a single and
Caleb Boswell homered to left center.
Tate Lewis capped off the game with his second homer of the day, fourth of the weekend.Â
Jakob Rochelle (W, 2-3) had a career day pitching 9.0 innings while only giving up three hits with a career high 10 strike outs. The NNU offense was just as effective scoring 17 runs on 16 hits including home runs from
Carter Walsh,
Caleb Boswell,
Carson Burns, and two from
Tate Lewis.
Kyle Becker and
Jake Mestas each had a double while
Adrian Arechiga went 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs, and two doubles.
Jake Mestas led the team with five RBIs.
