Nighthawks Excel at PNW Invite

| By:

Corvallis, OR - This weekend the Nighthawks battled some of the best track and field teams in the West. Despite facing several NCAA Division I programs, NCAA Division II regional and GNAC conference rivals, as well as some very strong competition from NCAA Division III and NAIA teams- the Nighthawks came home with some hardware.

Top Individual Finishers

In an extremely lively men's 5000m senior Grady Mylander finished first in 14:19 while Ian Stockett hung-on for third overall in 14:20. The race featured a ferocious bell-lap surge between six runners with Stockett closing the final lap in 58.2 and Mylander finishing in 59.6. Both were the fastest laps for any competitor in the event. On his strategy for the race Mylander stated: "Keep an honest race up front with my teammates- which they did an amazing job of and picked-up my slack, and then try to close it down as much as possible and battle for a win."

In the women's 5000m senior Morgan Erler finished second overall in 17:12. Teammate and recent Utah State University transfer Cameron Moore was not far behind in 17:14 (fourth overall).

Senior Laurenz Waldbauer won the men's javelin with an awe-inspiring 70.26m throw- more than ten feet beyond the rest of the field.

Rising star freshman Hazel Kunkel took first in the women's 800 with a personal best 2:14:56.

Impressive Gains

Not all victories resulted in podium finishes- but there were numerous personal-best performances and moral wins. Journeyman thrower Bryor Adams continued to inspire with a personal best in the weight throw (38.46m). Freshman phenom Zoey Stauffer ran a personal best in the 1500 (4:50) followed by a strong showing in the 800 (2:22). Sophomore hurdler Maddie Weatherford managed a new personal best in the 100mH (15.56).

With nearly months until the GNAC championship meet the future is looking bright for the Nighthawks!
