NNU Splits Friday Slate, Rallies Past Central Washington 6-4 Behind Lusk’s 11 Strikeouts

NAMPA, ID - Northwest Nazarene finished their final day of the Nighthawks Invitational on Friday the 20th. In a long day of competition the Nighthawks split, falling to the Gators in game one, 2-5, and defeating the Wildcats, 6-4.

Game 1: Northwest Nazarene 2, San Francisco State 5 (7 innings)

In game three of the match up between NNU and SFSU the Nighthawks looked to hold on to the momentum they gained after their 2 wins in day one of the Nighthawks Invitational.

The Nighthawks struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. After a leadoff single and stolen base from Ava Clark, NNU put pressure on the Gators early. With runners in scoring position, Hailey Harris delivered a clutch double to right center, driving in two runs to give Northwest Nazarene the 2-0 advantage.

NNU's defense held strong through the second, keeping San Francisco State hitless and off the scoreboard. However, momentum shifted in the top of the third. An error opened the door for the Gators, who capitalized with timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. San Francisco State pushed across four unearned runs in the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The Gators added one more in the fourth to extend their advantage to 5-2.

Northwest Nazarene had opportunities late, putting runners on in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, but was unable to come up with the timely hit to close the gap. San Francisco State's pitching staff settled in after the first, limiting the Nighthawks to just two hits over the final six innings.

Despite the early spark from Harris and aggressive baserunning throughout the game, NNU could not overcome the pivotal third inning and fell 5-2 in the opener.

Game 1: Northwest Nazarene 6, San Francisco State 4 (7 innings)

NNU wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first. Clark and Jami Obringer both worked walks and advanced on a passed ball before Bell came through with a single down the left field line, driving in two runs to give the Nighthawks an early 2-0 lead.

Central Washington responded in the second with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1, but NNU answered again in the fourth. After a leadoff single from Paisley Noyer, Riglee Peterson delivered an RBI single through the left side to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Wildcats added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, making it a one-run game at 3-2. That's when the Nighthawks created separation.

In the bottom of the sixth, NNU capitalized on a defensive miscue and aggressive baserunning. Annie Swanson drove in a run with a single to right before Obringer ripped a two-RBI single up the middle to push the advantage to 6-2.

Central Washington made things interesting in the seventh, plating two runs to trim the lead to 6-4, but the Nighthawks closed the door to secure the win.

I
n the circle, Miah Lusk earned the complete-game victory, moving to 5-2 on the season. She went all 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out 11 and walking four. Lusk kept the Wildcats off balance throughout the afternoon, tallying five flyouts and five groundouts to help seal the 6-4 win and secure the split for Northwest Nazarene.
