Trio of Nighthawks Headed to Pueblo for Outdoor Nationals

| By:
INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships selections have been announced on Tuesday afternoon, with Northwest Nazarene's Destany Herbert, Laurenz Waldbauer, and Gerohm Rihari earning qualification to the final meet.

Herbert made the cut in the women's shot put, while Waldbauer earned selection in the javelin and Rihari qualified in the high jump. This is Waldbauer's third time qualifying for nationals, also competing in the javelin in both 2022 and 2024.

The championships are set to be held May 22-24 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colorado, hosted by Colorado State Pueblo. All three Nighthawks' events are set for Saturday the 24th, with the women's shot put starting at 1:15 p.m., the men's javelin at 2:45 p.m., and the men's high jump at 4:45 p.m.

Herbert has achieved an invitation to the national meet for the first time in her career as a senior. She enters the championships ranked 11th in DII in the shot put, with her best mark coming in the recent GNAC Championships where she won gold with a toss of 15.25 meters (50'0.5").

Herbert is the 13th NNU women's athlete to qualify for NCAA outdoor nationals and just the third since 2019, joining Kinsey Yenor in the pole vault in 2023 and Madeline Gebers in the javelin last year. The NNU record holder in the event by a wide margin, she is also the first woman in program history to reach nationals in the shot put.

Waldbauer enters his third national meet ranked sixth in the men's javelin, holding a mark of 69.96 meters (229'6") from last week's GNAC Championships runner-up finish. The top marks of four of the five athletes ahead of him on the performance list are within less than three meters.

Waldbauer is the ninth men's NCAA Outdoor qualifier from NNU since the Nighthawks joined Division II. He is one of five NNU men's athletes to qualify for the outdoor meet in multiple years or multiple events.

Rihari grabbed one of the last qualifying spots in the men's high jump, sitting in a four-way tie for 17th among the 22 selections in the event. The senior's best mark was set at the NNU Open in early April with a clearance of 2.10 meters (6'10.75").

Rihari is the 10th different NNU men's athlete to qualify for Outdoor Nationals. He is the second to do so in the high jump, joining former teammate Steven Schmidt in 2023.
