McGee's Game Two Gem Earns Split at Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene softball split the opening day of their three-game series at Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday, falling 3-2 in eight innings in game one before a 7-1 victory in game two.

The Nighthawks move to 17-14 overall on the year.

Game One: CSUMB 3, NNU 2 (8 inn.)

The Otters struck first with a solo homer in the first inning. NNU took the lead with two runs in the fourth, as Kellcie Adams drove home Molly Buckingham with a sacrifice fly and Annie Swanson scored Keana Bell with an RBI single.

Monterey Bay was able to tie the game back up at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, though, and after a scoreless seventh, the game went to extras. In the bottom of the eighth, the Otters got a two-out single, stole second, and the winning run came in to score on a single to end the game.

Miah Lusk pitched well in the start for NNU, going the full 7.2 innings and allowing just two earned runs on five hits.

Game Two: NNU 7, CSUMB 1

It was NNU that got a solo homer to open the scoring in game two, as Bell launched her third of the season in the second inning. The Nighthawks added another run in the fourth, as Emma Bumatay led off the frame with a triple and came in to score on a single from Charlotte Forniss.

NNU added a bunch of insurance runs in the sixth inning, with Bell driving in two runs on a bases-loaded single, Adams delivering an RBI single, and Emma Mulligan bringing home two more with another single with the bases loaded to make it 7-0.

Riley McGee started in the circle and was dominant, only allowing five hits and one run in a complete game effort.

Mulligan, Moreno, and Bell all had two hits for the Nighthawks.
