Nighthawks Take Gritty 3-2 Win Over Wolves

MONMOUTH, Oregon – The Nighthawks traveled to Monmouth, Oregon, on Thursday, November 6, to face the Western Oregon Wolves in a thrilling five-set battle. After a hard-fought match filled with momentum swings, NNU came out on top, earning a 3-2 victory with set scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 27-29, and 15-8.

The Nighthawks started set one with an early deficit but quickly battled their way back. A block by Abby Black and Madi Smith gave NNU its first lead of the night at 11-10. Both teams traded points throughout the set, with the Nighthawks refusing to give up their edge. A kill by Mady Hellem provided the final momentum boost NNU needed to close out the set with a 25-20 win.

A kill by Hailey Cheney got the Nighthawks off to a strong start as set two began. NNU's offensive strength was on full display as they built up a steady lead, with a kill by Mady Hellem putting them up by 4. Western Oregon regrouped and tied the score at 7-7, but NNU stayed composed. The Nighthawks' front line continued to pressure the Wolves as Black and Hellem kept the offense rolling. Recording 17 kills and 5 blocks, NNU powered through to secure their second set win of the night, 25-22.

The energy stayed high heading into the fourth set as both teams traded points in a tight battle. The score remained close throughout, with Hellem putting down a kill to tie it at 19-19. Cheney followed up with a kill and a service ace to give the Nighthawks the lead, but the Wolves quickly responded, tying it at 24-24 to send the set into extra points. After a hard-fought back-and-forth, Western Oregon pulled ahead to take the set, 29-27.

With the match on the line, the teams took the court for the fifth and final set. NNU came out strong, taking four early points to establish a solid lead.
