Nighthawks Win in Opener of the Hampton Inn & Suites Nighthawks Classic

Nampa, Idaho - The Nighthawks started off the Hampton Inn & Suites Nighthawks Classic tournament this afternoon with an exciting win. They faced off against the Augustana Vikings.

Starting off in the first set NNU came out strong having an outstanding defensive game. Taking the lead early it seemed to be in the Nighthawks favor when AU began to battle from behind. The Vikings paired an offensive run with a few errors by NNU to pull out the first set win, 21:25.

In the second set AU carried in the first set momentum and went on an 8-1 point stretch to open the game. NNU's number 7 Abby Black took a hard hit off the head in the beginning of the set, however after getting checked out she returned to help her Nighthawks battle. Despite the serving run by Henjum that cut the Agustana lead by 4 the Vikings kept pushing to win the set 18-25.

Coming out into the third the Nighthawks took control on the court going on a 5-0 run. The partnered offensive efforts of Machado and Koch proved to be to much for the Vikings to fight against. Leading for the majority of the game the Nighthawks easily put away a 25:13 win to end the third.

The fourth set also proved to be in the Nighthawks favor as the took the win with a score of 25-21. With an outstanding showing on their defensive skills NNU shut down the Viking offense. The middle blockers for NNU Cheney and Holm had a stand out set.

In the fifth both teams brought intensity to the court feeling the importance of the high stakes set. As tensions rose as a won challenge in the middle made by NNU tied the game up 10-10. Keeping the game high paced and energy packed the Nighthawks used it to their advantage and overpowered the Vikings Offensively. With a huge kill by Cheney and an error by the Vikings the Nighthawks pulled out the overall victory with a 15-12 win in the fifth.
