NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene softball fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-0 in their first game of the day, then bounced back to defeat Saint Martin's 7-3 later in the day.
The Nighthawks are now 41-11 on the season.
Vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills
A dominant pitching performance from both sides resulted in only two runs being scored in the contest. The first run of the game came in the top of the fifth inning when Kianna Abellara hit a home run to give the Toros a 1-0 lead. The only other run of the game came from an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning, extending CSUDH's lead to 2-0.
NNU's offense was held to three hits in the game.
Jami Obringer singled in the bottom of the third inning on a bunt.
Clarissa Moreno doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. The final hit for NNU was a line drive single by
Emma Bumatay in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Sidney Booth pitched all seven innings and struck out 11 batters.
Vs. Saint Martin's
The Nighthawks wasted no time getting the offense going in their second game of the day. They put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Emma Mulligan led off the game with a double down the left field line.
Clarissa Moreno brought Mulligan in to score with a single. Moreno then advanced to third with a single from Booth and scored on a ground out from Bumatay.
After NNU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, each team was held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Saint Martin's strung together four hits to tie the game at 2-2.
Emma Mulligan answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Emalee Romero extended NNU's lead with a double to left center that scored
Olivia Bailey. The Nighthawks added two more runs of insurance in the bottom of the sixth to go up 7-2. The final run of the game came from the Saint's in the top of the seventh, bringing the game to the 7-3 final.
On Deck
The Nighthawks play against Cal State Dominguez Hills tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Time and need to win two games to win the NCAA West Regional Tournament.
