IRVINE, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene softball splits with #14 Concordia after an 11-inning showdown and nail biter that came down to the very end. NNU outscored CUI 6-1 in the 11-inning matchup and fell 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh in game two.
The Nighthawks move to 4-1 on the season.
Game 1
The Nighthawks began the scoring with one run in the top of the first inning.
Emma Mulligan led off the game with a single, stole second and later came around to score the first run of the game on an error by the catcher.
Sidney Booth pitched a no-hitter through six innings, but CUI tied the game with a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Despite two hits for the Nighthawks in both the eighth and ninth innings, each team still had just one run on the board until the top of the 11
th inning.
Keana Bell stole third base after beginning the inning on second base.
Jami Obringer brought bell into score with a go-ahead RBI single. The Nighthawks went on to score four more runs to take a 6-1 lead. Booth faced the minimum in the bottom of the 11
th and held on for the win.
Booth's final line was 11.0 innings pitched, striking out nine batters and allowing just one run on one hit.
Emma Mulligan went 3-6 with a double and two stolen bases.
Emma Bumatay went 2-5 with two RBIs to help the Nighthawks on their way to a win.
Game 2
Charlotte Forniss took the circle for the Nighthawks in game two. For the fifth consecutive game of the season, the Nighthawks got on the board first with a run in the third inning.
Ava Clark led off the inning with a base hit and was moved to second with a base hit from
Emma Mulligan.
Clarissa Moreno hit her second double of the game in the third inning to score Clark and put NNU up 1-0.
After three scoreless innings from Forniss, the Golden Eagles put their first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth after a walk and a couple of hits. Tied 1-1, NNU regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Moreno doubled for a third time in the game and scored Clark again.
CUI tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run and walked it off in the bottom of the seventh after a walk and two hits.
Three different Nighthawks had multi-hit games. Moreno went 3-3 with three doubles and two RBIs,
Emma Bumatay went 2-3, and
Ava Clark went 2-3 with two runs scored.
On Deck
The Nighthawks are scheduled to have some time off and resume their schedule in Ellensburg on February 23
rd when they take on the Central Washington Wildcats.
