NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene softball swept the Yotes 8-5 and 9-2 in their midweek doubleheader on Tuesday.
The Nighthawks move to 6-1 on the season.
Game 1
The Yotes jumped on the scoreboard first with an RBI single in the second inning and a two-run home run in the third inning to go up 3-0. The Nighthawks decided enough was enough and hung a four-spot in the bottom half of the third inning.
Abigail Gagnon homered to left field, scoring
Clarissa Moreno and bringing the score to 3-2. Three walks later, the bases were loaded for NNU and
Jami Obringer brought two runners into score with a base hit and give the Nighthawks a 4-3 lead.
College of Idaho scored a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4, but NNU responded with another rally in the bottom half of the inning.
Keana Bell hit a double with bases loaded to score
Sidney Booth and Gagnon. Kelcie Adams followed that up with an RBI single to score
Emma Bumatay.
Mari Kamemoto brought in Bell for the final run of the inning on a sac fly to right field to put NNU up 8-4. The Yotes scored one run in the top of the seventh inning and NNU took the 8-5 victory.
Obringer and Bumatay each had multi-hit games. Three different Nighthawks had two RBIs.
Sidney Booth pitched all seven innings for NNU. Booth allowed five hits, four earned runs, and six walks while striking out six batters.
Game 2
The Nighthawks scored the first run of game two when
Abigail Gagnon was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Two batters later,
Keana Bell was walked on five pitches to give NNU their second run of the inning. Kelcie Adams came to the plate next and hit a sac fly to score
Sidney Booth.
Jami Obringer then hit a double to score both Gagnon and Bell, giving the Nighthawks a 5-0 lead before the conclusion of the first inning.
Clarissa Moreno led off the bottom of the second inning with a double.
Sidney Booth moved her over to third on a ground out, and Gagnon brought her into score on a sac fly.
Kaylee Duncan led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double and was brought into score on an RBI single by
Emma Mulligan to give NNU a 7-0 lead.
The Yotes waited until the top of the sixth inning to show their first real signs of life, hitting two doubles and scoring two runs. NNU responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Gagnon led off the inning with a double and
Mari Kamemoto pinch ran for her. Bumatay brought Kamemoto around to score with a base hit and
Olivia Bailey pinch ran for her. Bailey scored on an RBI single from
Annie Swanson. Forniss sealed the deal in the top of the seventh, fielding two of the three outs herself on comebackers, to give NNU the 9-2 victory.
