LA JOLLA, Calif. – A big sixth inning pushed Point Loma past Northwest Nazarene baseball on Saturday night, with the Sea Lions taking an 8-4 victory.
The Nighthawks move to 1-1 on the early season.
PLNU put single runs on the board in the first and third innings. NNU wasn't able to get in the scoring column until the sixth frame, when
Casey Wayne brought home
Carter Walsh with a sacrifice fly.
The Sea Lions would respond in the bottom of the inning with six runs, though, going up 8-1. NNU got three back in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from
Duke Pahukoa and two-RBI double from
Trevor Tishenkel, but that 8-4 score would hold for the rest of the game.
Walsh and
Bryan Rojas each had three hits, with Walsh also recording a walk to reach base safely in four out of five plate appearances.
Josh Brown started for NNU, allowing two runs over five innings.
Kailer Saunders and Rojas each recorded an inning's worth of scoreless ball in relief.
NNU and PLNU are scheduled to finish off their season-opening series with a doubleheader on Monday, Feb. 5 starting at noon Pacific.
