NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene baseball made it a perfect 4-0 against College of Idaho this year, sweeping the Yotes on Saturday by scores of 8-1 and 2-1.
The Nighthawks improve to 7-1-1 on the season, while the Yotes fall to 6-8.
Game One
The Nighthawks got on the board early in the opener as
Kaleb Karpstein launched a three-run homer to right in the top of the first. C of I got one back in the top of the second, but that was erased quickly by a
Trevor Tishenkel solo home run in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1.
The Nighthawks would add two runs each in the fourth and the sixth.
Carter Walsh registered an RBI single and another run came across on an error in the fourth, while
Drew Deal notched an RBI single and Walsh an RBI triple in the sixth.
Kailer Saunders started for NNU and was brilliant, going 7.1 innings and allowing just two hits and one run while striking out 11 and issuing zero walks.
Josh Bishopp entered in relief with one out in the eighth and retired five batters to end the game without allowing a hit and striking out one.
Tishenkel finished 3-4 with a homer and two runs scored, while Walsh and Deal each had two hits. The Nighthawks had nine steals in the game.
Game Two
The second game was much lower scoring, with the Nighthawks and Yotes pitchers only allowing three combined runs.
NNU's came in the bottom of the second when
Manny Casillas scored on an error and Tishenkel crossed the plate on a wild pitch. C of I's run was tallied in the top of the third on a solo homer.
Cole Calnon dazzled in the start for the Nighthawks, going 7.1 innings and allowing just two hits and one run while striking out five and walking two.
Adam Brooks finished the last two outs of the eighth inning without giving up a hit and
Wade Duncan earned the save with a scoreless ninth.
Casey Wayne had two of the Nighthawks' five hits in the nightcap.
Next Up
NNU will head to Grand Junction, Colorado next weekend for a big four-game series with nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa.
