Nighthawks Go To Five In Close Game With Western Washington

BELLINGHAM, WASH. – NNU Volleyball competed in their second game on the road of the week against the Western Washington Vikings. In a five set game the Vikings were able to pull through with the win defeating the Nighthawks 3-2.  

In the first set of the game the Nighthawks struggled to find a competitive footing with the strong offensive showing by the Vikings. NNU recorded 7 kills compared to the 12 put down by the vikings. This combined with 3 blocks and 3 aces from Western Washington they were able to take the first set, 25-12. 


As the second set got underway the Nighthawks worked to turn the game in their favor. With consistency at the net the Nighthawks recorded a hitting percentage of .133 compared to the Vikings .041. As the second came to a close, NNU found their way on top winning 25-16. 


Coming out in the third, the teams matched up very competitively. Both teams recorded 18 kills however it was the four blocks put up by the Vikings that gave them the set. The score was 25-23 to end the set in favor of Western Washington. 


Despite the Vikings' chance to end it all in the fourth set of the game the Nighthawks were able to rally together and take the win, 25-22. However, as the fifth and final set of the match got underway the Western Washington Vikings were able to edge their way to a victory recording a close win of 21-19. 


Abby Black led the Nighthawks offensively putting down an impressive 23 kills. Morgan Wilding recorded 55 assists from the setters position and Kayci Spray led with 22 digs  


The Nighthawks will be back in their home gym next week as they finish off their season with two games in the Johnson Sports Center. The first match is scheduled for the 21st at 7:00 p.m. against Western Oregon.
