Nighthawks Clipped by #24 Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene volleyball hung with 24th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona for most of the night, but fell to the Broncos 3-1 to suffer their first loss of the season.

The Nighthawks fell just short in the opening set, leading 19-16 but succumbing to a late run from CPP as the Broncos stole a 25-23 victory.

Set two was all CPP, with the home team using a 7-0 run midway through the frame to pull away for a 25-15 win.

NNU totally turned the tables in set three, however, grabbing back the momentum by taking an early 7-2 lead after back-to-back kills from Maren Dent and an ace from Gabi Moore. The Nighthawks kept it rolling, leading by as much as nine before a Londyn Giles kill solidified the 25-19 victory and forced a fourth set.

The Nighthawks and Broncos played the fourth set close, but ultimately CPP held on for a 25-22 victory to take the match.

Giles and Dent both had double-doubles, with Giles at 16 kills and 11 digs and Dent recording 13 of each.

Caroline McMahon led the team with 20 digs, while Miya Koch added 15 and Gabi Moore 10. Moore also notched 38 assists, three aces, three blocks, and hit .500 with five kills and no errors on 10 attempts.

NNU will make the short trip from Pomona to Azusa tomorrow morning to take on Azusa Pacific before returning to Pomona in the evening for a match against No. 20 Chaminade.
