Nighthawks Drop Two Against Point Loma

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene baseball came up two runs short in each game of the season-opening doubleheader against Point Loma 7-5 and 5-3.

The Nighthawks are 0-2 to begin the season.

Game One

The Sea Lions quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with four hits and one error by the Nighthawks.

In the top of the second, the Nighthawks answered back with a run of their own. Colby Moran and Shane Jamison each walked in 3-2 counts. Rumble Reyes came to the plate with the two runners on first and second, and he delivered an RBI single to right field for NNU first run of the game.

With two outs in the top of the 3rd, Tyler Best singled to left field. Best's single brought Duke Pahukoa to the plate, and he evened the score 3-3 with a two-run blast to right-center field.

PLNU answered with a two-run home run of their own to take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the 3rd.

Reyes collected his third hit of the game with a two-out single down the right field line, advancing Moran from 1st to 3rd. That hit brought up Nolan Walker who hit a ground ball through the right side and got his first RBI as a Nighthawk. PLNU pitching walked in the fifth and final run for the Nighthawks to make the score 5-5 in the top of the 6th.

PLNU regained the lead with a solo home run and an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th.

Brock Moffitt started for the Nighthawks and posted a final line of 4.2 innings pitched, giving up five runs, four of them earned, on six hits with six strikeouts. Ty Pohlmann received the loss after relieving Moffitt in the fifth and throwing 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Nick Irwin entered the game in the top of the seventh and threw two scoreless innings without allowing a hit.

Rumble Reyes had a standout 3-4 game with an RBI and a run scored.

Game Two

In game two, it was the Nighthawks getting out to a quick lead. Singles from Shane Jamison and Tyler Best were followed by a big blast to left field off the bat of Duke Pahukoa to put the Nighthawks up 3-0 in the top of the 1st.

The Sea Lions were unable to generate any offense off Nighthawks' starter Spencer Schwehr until the bottom of the 3rd inning. PLNU's first and only run of the game off Schwehr was unearned and came from a double to right-center field.

After collecting two quick outs, Schwehr was relieved by Joseph Ihli in the bottom of the sixth. Ihli allowed three singles and a grand slam to give Point Loma the 5-3 lead before getting the final out of the inning.

Schwehr's final line was 5.2 innings pitched, allowing just one unearned run, on two hits with six strikeouts.

Matthew Reynolds was the only Nighthawk with a multi-hit game, collecting hits in the 3rd and 6th inning.
