BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Northwest Nazarene women's soccer fell in heartbreaking fashion for the second time this week, allowing an own goal with just 24 seconds remaining in a 2-1 loss at Western Washington.
Â
The Nighthawks move to 4-3-3 on the season and 2-3-1 in GNAC play.
Â
NNU got on the board first early with some help from WWU. The Nighthawks earned a corner in the fourth minute of action and it was sent into the box by
Madison Grande, where a Viking defender attempted to clear the ball but headed it into the goal past the far post for an own goal.
Â
WWU evened things up 20 minutes later though, with Jayden Nguyen scoring on a corner of their own to make it 1-1. The two teams spent much of the first half in the midfield, managing just seven shots between them over the opening 45 minutes.
Â
The Vikings were able to put together more chances in the second half, but it would take all the way until the final 30 seconds before they found the winner. A dangerous cross came into the box and was sent off the crossbar by WWU's Claire Potter before the rebound was accidentally knocked into the goal off the head of an NNU defender.
While WWU had more shots in the game at 14-8, NNU held the advantage in shots on target at 6-4.
Â
The Nighthawks will be home in Nampa for four straight games over the next two weeks, starting with Saint Martin's next Thursday, October 12
